Gorge Amphitheater - George, (Quincy), Washington, United States

by Robyn Kingman on July 31, 2000

Yet another great concert by Sting! He looked like he was having a great time up there on stage, not quite as stationary as the last concert I went to. Very good choice in music order..same complaint about the front row people..FAR too many sitting during most of the concert, but everyone was up and rocking towards the end. I was sitting way too far away, on Sting's left hand side as you face the audience, back in General Admission. I could barely see Sting's face with my binoculars, and he was looking good as ever. Poor KD Lang, she just was no match for Sting, or Sting fans!!

Were you at the same show I was? It sure doesn't sound like it. I was in the 11th row, center... not a soul was sitting down in front of me (nor behind me, as far as I could tell) save for a couple dozen folks during "Fields of Gold." In fact, me and everyone around me folded up the stupid chairs and placed them aside -- we had our minds made up! It was by far the most energetic front section I've had the pleasure of witnessing in the half dozen shows I've seen...

Ross and I attended the 3 Sting shows this weekend in Vancouver, Portland, and the Gorge. That meant over 1000 miles on the car, hotels, sleep on couches, lots of trips to Starbucks, and one very weary CD player.

The Gorge's show Sunday night was the same setlist as Portland, but had tons of energy. We sat in a nice spot in the General Admission grass, as this is the best way to enjoy a show in America's prettiest outdoor Amphitheatre. To hear Sting and the band under the stars, with a huge canyon and the Columbia River in the background can't be described. You just have to be there. Sting screwed up the words in Perfect Love, and again in When the World, repeating the first verse, then kind of mumbling his way out of it. My friend claimed there was a shooting star between Message in a Bottle and Fragile, and I guess we just have to believe her. The wait to get out of the parking lot after the show was exactly 1 hour and 15 minutes. How do you manage to enjoy that? One way we found to enjoy it was to listen to other cars playing Sting songs. Children's Crusade wasn't part of the setlist, but it was fun to hear it blaring from a car in the lot.

It was great to be at these shows, particularly with Ross. If he writes a review to the list, perhaps he'll include his thoughts on the roses that were intended for Sting at the Portland show.

It was after the Northwest shows in 1996 that I met Jeremy and Ross through this mailing list. There's something about seeing Sting in your own backyard.

I saw Sting on Sunday night at the Gorge... We were there 5 hours early which made for decent seats on the grass. I must admit that the show was a 'tiny bit' of a disappointment. He said hardly a thing to the audience.. I agree with whoever said it seemed like he was on Auto Pilot. Tuesday morning on the Mountain here in Seattle he had an interview admitting that he thinks of nothing on stage.. That he is zoned. (and no-- there was no comment about his body odor--) However there was a comment by the DJs saying that they have never heard so many woman go crazy about how sexy he looked after the show.. Anyway back to the music. I saw him in Houston (Mercury Falling) and he seemed more into it. There was allot of talking to the audience. The show was fun! This one seemed like all business. The biggest disappointment for me was the fact that he did not play hardly any slow tunes. He left out Mad About You -- Why Should I Cry For You -- I Was Brought To My Senses -- GHOST STORY <--- majorly sad about that one.. Anyway I must say that all in all I did enjoy myself. Just hearing his voice and knowing he is there on stage is enough to make me smile.. We are going to Las Vegas and seeing him at the MGM.. We spent 275 on 2 tickets..(Ouch) so hopefully he will involve the crowd a bit more during that show. And HOPEFULLY I will be able to see him!

I went to his concert at the Gorge at George in Washington and I must say, for my first concert without anything to compare it to...it was great! And he played the 2 songs I really wanted him to...All This Time and Fields of Gold... Kinda weeded out the people around me when I sung those two songs about 4 seconds ahead of him.

If he continues to play those 2 songs in concert I will continue to go see him.. and next time I hope I hear about it with a little more warning other than the wednesday of the week he is playing on that sunday...guess I should pay more attention...too bad I didn't have the money for front row seats...$100 is a little much for me to come up with on a moments notice...

So keep playin those 2 songs in concert and you will have a guarenteed long time fan in the crowd...
