After seeing Sting last night (my fifth time and fourth tour seeing him), I have to say he can still perform great, even though I am not too fond of the latest album. If there was a problem it was that the musicians seemed bored. I don't understand why Sting doen't vary his set list slightly to make it more interesting. But, in any case, they pulled it off and he was a great performer as always. I have to say I was extremely dissapointed in the set list (as I knew I would be from reading this group). Its bad enough that Message in Bottle and Fortress Around Your Heart dissappeared on the last tour, but since this tour began the set list has shrunk by dropping King of Pain, Mad Aout You, The Bed's Too Big Without You, Twenty Five to Midnight, This Cowboy Song, and Let Your Soul Be Your Pilot (and possibly All Four Seasons, I can't exactly remember the early set lists). The exclusion of LYSBYP puzzles me, there is no reason for it. Can anyone explain?
Anyway, 18 songs does not seem to enough. On the 88 tour he was playing for 2 1/2 hours and now he is down to 95 minutes with three more albums of material. It just doesn't seem right to forget so many of the best songs ever written.
I'm wondering if there is anyone else who saw Sting last night who was unreasonably harrassed by the security guards. I was completely disrupted for 45 minutes by gaurds who said I was not allowed to stand. Can you imagine me committing such a dispicable crime as standing at a rock concert? I have already filed an official complaint with Target Center and I would appreciate hearing from anyone else who had problems.
I would also like to commend the group of forty-something people in section 133 for their maturity in verbally abusing us, giving us the finger, and throwing food and ice at us. It will be weeks until my girlfriend gets the gum out of her hair. I'm sure glad they didn't bring the immature kids with.
I'm going to say something and let you all run with it (can't remember the last time there was a discussion...).
I saw Sting's Mpls, MN show the other night. It was the third time I've seen him.
Okay, big breath, I can do this...
The show bit. I was completely disappointed with the setlist. I was praying for more than I got. Not one song off of TSC. One song from DOTBT and two from NLTS... and two songs from TST. Five songs from MF. A measly three Police songs.
All told: 13 songs, about 1:35 running. Ugh. Plus I had to listen to Lyle Lovett open *and* sing with Sting.
Then I realized what's wrong with Sting's new stuff. It all occurred to me when he went from "I Was Brought..." straight into Synch II. Then it hit me. His new stuff just doesn't rock. I felt like I was at a Rod Stewart show.
It was the worst of the three shows I've seen by *far*.
Okay, I've put the gas on, so I'll let you all light the fire!
I also saw Sting in Minneapolis last Wednesday, and Tony, I think we saw two different shows! (Check out Thursday's Star-Tribune for an EXCELLENT review!) It was the eighth time I had seen Sting, and I think it was one of his best concerts! I counted 19 songs (not 13!)-I would have liked to hear something from The Soul Cages too but I was so glad to hear he's still doing the old Police stuff, and I love Mercury Falling now that I've heard it live! The Minnesota audience was enthusiastic and crazy as usual-at least everyone in my area of the Target Center loved it! Sting, it was great to have you back in Minneapolis and I can't wait to see you again in Phoenix next month!!! (Sting, You Still Touch Me!!!)
Hehe, the Pioneer Press said it reminded them of a big Dockers commercial (or that it made one want to go out and buy Dockers).
Reviews never really tell me what to think of something...
I actually forgot to count Roxanne (ugh), and didn't count the Bring On/When the World medley as two songs. But the concert was still darn short. It wasn't the two and a half hours I've seen at his last two shows, for sure.
Yeah, the crowd was good. Especially the two drunk frat boys behind me who were trying to mosh and screaming to "Fragile". I'd like to tip my hat to the exceedingly efficient Target Center security staff.
(tongue firmly in cheek)
Just getting a little jaded.
