Marcus Amphitheater - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States

by Marisa Meisters on August 3, 1996

If I had to describe Sting's Milwaukee concert last night in just one word, it would be: wonderful! Even Lyle Lovett's performance was pretty good. I certainly liked him a lot better than Dada three years ago.

The first surprise of the evening was finding out that my seat was even better than I thought it would be. Because seats are numbered so strangely, it appeared that I would be in the 17th row- which would have been fine with me. Instead it turned out that I was in the 11th row- better yet!

The second surprise of the night happened during Lyle's set. Right before Lyle performed his second to last song, an extra microphone was put on stage. Sure enough, who came out to sing a duet with Lyle but Sting! I wish I knew the name of the song: it was about a Texan with a 10 gallon hat (and appropriately enough Sting came out sporting a 10 gallon hat). Sting mainly echoed what Lyle was singing, though they did sing choruses together and sounded great together. If nothing else, it was worth arriving early enough to catch Lyle's performance just for that duet! After opening for Sting, Lyle and his band spent the rest of the show enjoying Sting's performance from stage left.

The other great surprise was that Sting's voice was phenomenal last night! While this was only my third time seeing him, I have never heard him sing (either live or on live recordings) with as much gusto as he did last night. He sang with such force, and held out vocal notes for a very long time on most songs - something I have never heard him do before (at least not to the degree he did last night). His voice remained strong for the entire show. He could have kept on singing forever it seemed.

Some of the more memorable moments of the evening included the extended horn solos on I Was Brought to My Senses, Sting and the horn players running in place together on Lithium Sunset, and the rapping saxophonist on Englishman in New York. And who could forget Kenny's wonderful five minute extended solo on When The World Is Running Down... Last night he somehow managed to top his amazing performance from the Bring on the Night album.

Sting brought Lyle back out on stage to sing I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying. Lyle sang the roles of the wife and the friend in the song, and joined Sting on the chorus. The harmonizing on the chorus was flawless. Their voices worked very well together.

The entire show was almost flawless, until Fragile. As usual, Dominic took over on bass guitar for the song. A couple times, the roadies came onto stage and were doing something with Dominic's bass. At one point, his bass cut out entirely leaving Sting accompanied by only the sparse percussion. Nevertheless even this "flaw" was pulled off so fluidly that most of the audience didn't even realize what had happened.

Sting's setlist was as follows:

  1. The Hounds Of Winter
  2. I Hung My Head
  3. I Was Brought To My Senses
  4. If You Love Somebody Set Them Free
  5. Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
  6. Seven Days
  7. You Still Touch Me
  8. I'm So Happy, I Can't Stop Crying
  9. Fields Of Gold
  10. Synchronicity II
  11. Roxanne (extended)
  12. Bring On The Night/When The World Is Running Down...
  13. Demolition Man
  14. Englishman In New York
  15. If I Ever Lose My Faith In You
  16. Every Breath You Take
  17. Lithium Sunset
  18. Fraglie

It was a show I will never forget!
