Shoreline Amphitheater - Mountain View, (San Jose), California, United States

by Betty Sanchez-Mallory on August 12, 2000

I have been a Sting fan for many years but have never seen him perform live, so my wonderful and loving husband decided to take me to this concert as his anniversary present to me. We live in Central California and would have to drive four hours to get to the Shoreline. We arrived and found our places - section 103, row P, seats 7 & 8.

k.d. lang opened for Sting and she was very good despite having to play to a half-empty audience. Most were milling out front where numerous booths were set up (free earplugs from yahoo.com; free mini flashlights from brassring.com... $30.00 concert t-shirts! yike.)

I was pretty cool up until the lights went down and Sting's band came walking out to take their places onstage. I'm a 35 year old mother of four but the minute those lights went out I became 15 years old again and started screaming! Sting looked fantastic in olive green cargo pants & sleeveless black t-shirt showing off his well-toned arms. He slipped on his bass and opened the show with "A Thousand Years"...and just didn't stop playing for the next 2 hours. The crowd was on their feet for most of the show, dancing as Sting played "Every little thing she does is magic" or singing along call & response style for "Roxanne". (right in the middle of this, I suddenly realized, ohmigod...I am singing with STING!!!)

A very emotional moment for me when Sting played "All This Time"; I lost my father to liver cancer in January and this song reminds me of him. I was on my feet (with the rest of the crowd) singing along and dancing as tears ran down my cheeks. It was one of those moments I'll always remember.

Sting's band was extraordinary. We were especially impressed with the keyboard player and guitarist. What beautiful guitar playing for "Fields of Gold"! My 18 year old daughter told me to scream extra loud for this, her favorite Sting song, and I didn't disappoint her. "Seven Days" was a whimsical delight, great fun to sing along to. A huge monitor above the stage would show closeups of Sting and his facial expressions while he sang this song were priceless! My husband made the comment to me that it was very apparent Sting really loves what he does.

While he played "Desert Rose", I thought it would have been great if he had hired some belly dancers to perform with him during this song. (Before writing this, I read about the LUCKY lady in Santa Barbara who would get to do just that the very next evening!) The enthusiastic crowd twice demanded an encore - Sting did not disappoint - and we were again treated to gorgeous guitar work on "Fragile".

The show did seem abbreviated, however. I missed hearing "This Cowboy Song", "Why should I cry for you", "Sister Moon" & "Little Wing", just to name a few of my favorites that went unplayed. No offense, k.d., but I think Sting has a large enough body of work and certainly the fan base to not need an opening act. I saw Elton John last year and it was 3 hours of Elton & a piano. I think Sting is more than ready to have this kind of show. My husband came away from this show a brand new Sting fan (he said he loved the way Sting came out and just played, "no b.s., just music") and I pretty much floated back to our hotel room. We can't wait to see him again!

First, we love Sting. Second, we love your site. Third, I am french, so please excuse my English.

It was our first Sting concert and it was a blast! It also was our anniversary. There was about 20,000 fans at that nice and warm summer night. Most of the fans were our age!!! (30-50).

K.D. Land was not one of our favorite, but we were pleasantly surprised. By the way, K.D. Land's drummer must have lost at least 10lbs after playing a few songs!

Sting played for about 1h 40 min to 1h 50 min, and played all the songs we like, what a treat. We didn't have great seats, but we are trying to go back for his San Diego concert and maybe be on the first row. (If any of you know of someone with good tickets for sale, for San Diego, please let us know) A giant screen above the stage gave us a closer look at Sting and his musicians, who in our opinion are really good artists. The guitar player (sorry I don't recall his name) played with talent. The keyboardist is extremely good, along with all the others. What happend to the Arab singer?

We stand up for many songs and the public was singing along. But I was expecting more interaction with his fans. Anyway, we hope we will see him again this year and for many years to come.

After the concert, we went to our car, but couldn't stand the lines and traffic so we took out the pâté, fromage, french bread and champagne and enjoyed the stars... "A brand new day" for us...
