Let me start out by saying that the heat was intense as Hades itself. But that is Texas in August. Never again will I attend a show in an amphitheater in August for anyone.
My eleven year old and I attended the radio station promo sound check----those people could not sing----she was delighted that Sting said HELLO LITTLE GIRL. Too shy to sit with the rest of the people in front of the stage.
The band was in good spirits after a night off before the show and the party-time they had at a local club. They gave away sixty backstage passes---lucky puppies.
Best show they have done in a long time and more verbage with the audience. Favorite lighting design of the show is Fields of Gold---so says my daughter.
Second runner-up was the backdrop on the last song (yeah with the stars). Did not care for the warm up band but to be fair would have sounded better on the radio. The saxaphone player was a delight to visit with and a inspiration for practice time with the musical instrument of choice. Thanks.
I am sure everyone else will cover set list and quotes of remarks so I will not go there.
Oh yeah did I mention it was REALLY REALLY REALLY HOT???!!!!!!!!
One more thing---- What was I thinking going out in that heat?????!!!!!!!
Just back in from Austin, and thought I would do a recap of the last couple of days. This really is a tale of two cities and two shows, one limp, one fully erect. Deb and I hadn't really planned on going to this one at all until some 3rd row tickets appeared in our hands at 1 in the afternoon on the day of the show. After a 300 mile drive across Texas, we found ourselves in the 104 degree sauna that was Dallas.
Dallas Starplex August 25th 2000
This is the first show that I have seen since the Red Rocks show in July, and at that time I was feeling a little tired (sick to death) of the shows. Well the Dallas show was excellent stuff all round. The setlist, while more or less identical to more or less every other show he has done on this tour, was energised by the bands enthuisiasm, smiling, jumping, dancing and general frolicking around.
I am not going to sit and type out the setlist tonight as it hasn't changed, and I usually just poke fun at it anyways. The highlights of the show were that Sting's eye contact with the audience has increased ten fold, and he has started talking a little more in between songs. As he no longer has the long show off note at the end of Tomorrow we'll see, he has now extended the long note at the end of of Bourbon street just to show off his vocal talents.... and Danny's laptop skills.
Oh what the hell, here is the setlist
The audience stood from beginning to end, and even though a lot of them didnt really seem to be all that familiar with the music, there was a sense of fun in them. The woman beside me seemed to dislike all the attractive women in the front row however ..... so I had to tolerate chants of whore and Trophy wife for the last couple of songs.
Thanks for uugggh, thanks for listening, god bless, and we'll see you again.
We've got 2nd row tix for Houston and Birmingham, so expect some enthusiastic reviews to come in the next few days....
