Mars Music Amphitheater - West Palm Beach, Florida, United States

by Rebecca Rubin and Josh Romaine on September 4, 2000

This is the third show my fiancée and I have seen on this tour. In addition to seeing Sting on the beginning of this tour last October, (see review November 6, 1999) we were also in Tennessee on August 30, for my fiancée's 30 birthday. This was a great experience, because we had a friend who is the caterer and hooked us up with back stage passes. Yes we saw him backstage right after sound check, eating sliced apples on a paper plate. It was an awesome experience and I will never forget it. Sting is short, when you see him face to face, off a stage and all. I gave him the biggest smile and he gave me a huge one right back. We were less than 2 feet apart. I loved it!

Now on to the review of the Palm Beach show. I was interested in writing this because of the comparison between the two venues. (for starters, TN had only Chrysler showing cars, while in Palm Beach, they gave away a 2 year Jaguar lease) Both shows were great, but Sting was more or less pushing through the songs in Tennessee, just getting it done. However, I must applaud the Tennessee fans, who, in addition to being friendly, were on their feet, and singing, and feeling it. We danced from start to end. Before I tell you about the Palm Beach fans, I will tell you that we are from Florida, and have lived here more than 15 years. The Palm Beach fans weren't only old "fuddy duddy's", but they were stuffy, stinky, bitchy, and cranky. We had a bunch of a** holes around us yelling "sit down" at us, and other fans. We were like "stand up" or better yet, go home. These people were really ridiculous, and we fully ignored them, and danced our hearts out. We paid $100 per seat, and we came to party!

Anyway, the Palm Beach show was the best of the two, musically speaking. Sting poured out the songs. He had a belly dancer on stage with him for Dessert Rose (we assume from the Camel VIP Lounge, she didn't dance with him in TN). The beginning of the tour was definitely better lyrically, due to Sting's back up singers. They were not on either of the latter shows. We noticed much pre-recorded back up vocals. But Sting still poured out the songs. The set list didn't vary from one night to the next, but we were ready for each song before it came, which got us that much more pumped! Fill Her Up went by too fast, I love that song. And Moon Over Bourbon Street was better last year when Sting wore a stylish hat to help set the mood. But the major up swing for me was this:

ROXANNE-O!
ROXANNE-O!
ROXANNE-O!
ROXANNE-O!
ROXANNE-O!
ROXANNE-O!

I am sure that will be in my head for the next few weeks! I loved it!

First of all does anyone have a set list? From this particular one or from a previous show, so that I might remember the show better.

Also, how in the hell do you get front row tix? What do I gotta do?

The bad first... Complaints:

Highlights include:

Thats about it. The show was great, and I wish I had known earlier that I could have catered the Orlando show two days before because I happen to know some people that told me too late. Hope everyone else got a chance to see this show!

Perpetual lurker and undisputed greatest Sting fan ever,

Don't even bother to argue that greatest fan thing, you'll lose just by the sheer fact that I ignore any challenges to that title.

A friend and I drove down from the Orlando area to see the show at the Mars Music Amphitheater in West Palm Beach (Sept. 3, 2000). I was a little disappointed with our seats, but they were better than most.

This was my first time at this venue. My three year old has more manners than most of the audience members. It was the first show I had been to where the audience sat on their laurels for most of the show.

Sorry, but I came a long way to enjoy myself, not sit on my butt. Eventually the crowd loosened up and we were able to enjoy the show.

This was my first Sting concert, and it won't be my last. Despite the attitude of the crowd, the show itself was great. Jonny Lang was incredible. His sound and style is very smooth. I had to do a double take because it was hard to believe that kind of sound could come from someone so young. I now own two of his cds.

Sting was breath taking. The show began with A Thousand Years and ended with Fragile. I lost track of everything in between those two songs.

The sound was amazing, every song melted into the next. There were a lot of highlights such as the nearly naked belly dancer during Desert Rose, Jonny joining Sting on stage during Brand New Day, Sting trying to out sing Chris' trumpet playing, and, of course, RoxannO. It was great to see and hear him live. He really seemed to enjoy performing. The staff at the Amphitheater were very cool. We managed to get a few personal pics. I walked right up to the stage during Fragile. When Sting was finished he walked across the stage and shook a few hands, including mine. I was in no way disappointed. Need less to say, I'm anxiously waiting for his next stop in Florida.
