Yes!! That's right... At last, your South African connection has seen the Stinger.
Sting played to a capacity crowd tonight at Cape Town's Good Hope Centre. He was on top form and we just lapped it all up!! The concert was quite different from the Oslo concert televised here earlier this year. For one thing, we started raving from the first note - unlike the Norwegians who had to be told to come and party for the final encores.
The design of the show has totally changed too: he now has backdrops which drop :-D Well, what we mean is that there are a whole lot of backdrops hanging one behind the other. Periodically the front one drops revealing the next one - until at the end of Fragile all that remains is the 'stars' (okay, little lights)!
We were a great audience (even if we do say so ourselves). Sting was as much impressed with us as we were with him. He danced around, jumped around, laughed, waggled his butt, and even spoke. That is, he said more than his usual two sentences...
The set was pretty much the same as usual. In fact, very much the same as you guys have described. BUT David's keyboard solo in BotN/When the World is Running Down was doubled in length on the spur of the moment! When Dave got to the usual end, Sting just looked at him, shook his head, and they carried on... So Sting can still improvise after all!!
He was even so overwhelmed that he messed up his lyrics in two places... And you guys say they're just like musical robots - HAH!
All in all we're completely thrilled. Uh... And speechless... WOW!
