Do It Yourself (DIY) Tips and Helpful Information

This page is going to serve as a "learn from our trials and tribulations" type of thing. I feel it is our responsibility to share information on this super duper highway, the way "they" originally intended. Plus, its just a good thing. I first discovered the internet because I wanted information about recording and pressing a product. I ended up doing hundreds of hours (and on company time on the day job - don't tell the boss!) of surfin' and discovering a ton of useful sites that I still visit to this day for current info and advice.

I can honestly say that without the internet and the online community, I would not have reached as far as I have in such a short amount of time. (i.e.- recording and pressing a CD, promoting it, booking a tour, learning how to 'program' and maintain a web site, and much more). This page is our donation to this community - fellow musicians who don't have time or money to extensively research everything that exists in the online world (although I encourage that you do so, anyway) or are not aware of what lies outside of their geographic location.

The final words: Knowledge truly is power! SHARE any new found information, tips, news, etc. with your fellow struggling musician. A competitive attitude may be healthy to an extent, but those unwilling to collaborate will be doomed to fail...

VERY kool DIY site!!!

...just discovered the Musicians Assistance Site (MAS) website and I've found this to be one of the best sites on the net for musician resources. Info on the US and Canada, places to play, places to stay, maps, radio, press, and other really helpful bits of information. This site is laid out well and is very user friendly.

If you're a musician or band doing your own thing, then you've got to check out this resource!!

Touring Tip...

Here's a "lodging" DiY tip for those of you booking your own tours or just looking to play a gig here and there in different markets. If you're on a tight budget, stop at a "Rest Area" on your way to your target city. They usually have tourist area information centers where they'll have info on sights to see, places to stay, etc. 9 times out of 10, hotels will have last minute discount coupons on their brochures at these rest stops that are exclusive to the rest area - you'll have to book your room from the rest area (and risk the possibility of a non-vacant hotel, which rarely happens). On average, you can find a double room for about $35 a night with the last minute coupons; maybe even including a complimentary continental breakfast (bagels, muffins, cereal, coffee, tea - small, quick foods).

If you're really anxious to just get out there, then [depending on where you play], there's a large chance of someone attending the concert offering you a place to stay - most would be honored to have a rock band stay at their place, especially if they think you may eventually be famous. Just remember to be gracious and polite, do your own dishes and clean up after yourself - you may be offered to stay there again for any future gigs in the area!

GeoCities Get your own Free Home Page. This is a great way to get your own web page for free! Put yourself or your band on the internet and reach thousands that you might not otherwise be able to reach.

HTML Goodies! - O.k., so you visited the GeoCities page and got yourself a web site for free. You have all of these kool ideas about putting up your own web page - for your favorite band, to share good recipes, to let people know about your completely stock '64 Corvette Stingray, etc. How do you create a web page? This site is the only one I have seen of its kind that guarantees you will learn how to "program" a web page (write in HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language) in 7 days. This site is incredible and sooo useful. You can learn HTML "programming", how to add images to your site, links, java scripts, and a lot more. If you know nothing about anything mentioned here, this site is perfect for you. If you are already familiar with the above, then check this site out too! It has some advanced stuff that you'll find helpful.

Gajoob - this is another great source of "do it yourself" sites, and other goings on. You can subscribe to their newsletter for free. This has proven to be a very valuable tool for us. Its definitely worth checking out.

Deterrent Tour Manual - We found out about this through Gajoob (above). This site contains the "internet black book" for touring - it tells which places are good to play, which to avoid, which promoters are pricks, which are *actually* kool, etc. If you are in a band or are vacationing somewhere and want to know where to check out bands, this site is worth a visit. It's popular because it spans all 50 states and most of Canada.

As always, be sure to check back - we'll be loading this up all the time! If you have anything useful to share with others, e-mail us and we'll post it here.
