Movies I Have Seen
.
This list was started on the 17th July 1997
- SPAWN - 6/10 - Early December 1997 -
Greater Union Macquarie Centre. Amazing special effects!
- LA Confidential - 7/10 - Saturday 15th
November 1997 - Greater Union Macquarie Centre. LA
confidential is a demanding detective thriller that will
keep you thinking right till the end. It stars Aussies
Russel Crowe (Go Russel Go!!!), Guy Pierce and Simon
Baker Denny plus Kevin Spacey, Danny Devito and Kim
Bassinger. An involved story with a lot of characters
means that unless you pay careful attention the whole
thing can slip past you. But if you can keep track of all
the names it is a really entertaining flick.
- A Life Less Ordinary - 7/10 - Thursday
6th of November 1997 - City Hoyts Sydney. Thanks to the
Drum Media for the free double pass to this preview
screening of A Life Less Ordinary. Starring Ewan
Trainspotting Macgregor and Cameran Grrrrrrll
Diaz this was quite a bizarre yet entertaining
movie. Ewan almost had as many whingeing lines in this
movie as C-3PO does in Star Wars but a whinge is a lot
easier to swallow when spoken in a Scottish accent as
opposed to a metallic girly voice. If you ignore the fact
that this movie was made by the same people who made Trainspotting
(They are nothing alike and expectations often lead to a
letdown.) and you are in the mood for a weird script and
an easy laugh you're sure to enjoy A Life Less
Ordinary. Oh Yeah it has a pretty funky soundtrack
as well.
- Clerks & Chasing Amy
(Double Feature) - 9/10 - Sunday 2nd of
November 1997 - Valhalla Cinema Glebe. I couldn't think
of a better way to spend Sunday night (Except maybe
playing cards with Fatty, Gobbo, Nud and Mouth) then
going to see this Double Feature with Heidi, Loz, Georgie
and Scott. Kevin Smith
(aka Silent Bob, and also the guy who originally worked
in the QuickStop in Clerks, and also the guy who I think
wrote and directed the movie) is a modern day legend.
Both these movies are filled with absolute classic lines,
and no matter how hard you try once you leave the cinema,
you will never be able to say them as well as you
remember them. Watching these movies back to back I was
quite delighted to see how many interlinked references
there were. I laughed myself silly even when I wasn't
supposed to and Heidi got quite emotional during the more
intense moments of Chasing Amy. PS Don't ever pass up an
opportunity to see Clerks on the big screen. "I'm
not even supposed to be here today", "They're
a bunch of savages in this town", "37!!!!!!",
"You got any balls down there??? Only about the
biggest pair you've ever seen! Dingleberry!!"
- Contact - 9/10 - Saturday 1st of
November 1997 - Greater Union Macquarie Centre. This
movie came highly recommended by Benny
and as he didn't tell me anything about it, I won't tell
you anything about it (Well not much anyway). Contact was
written by long time scientist Carl Sagan and
stars Jodi Foster who once again is absolutely
fantastic. Superb acting, incredible special effects and
an amazing story makes this 2 and a half hour movie seem
disappointingly short. The story is actually quite a
simple one, but it has many levels and layers of
complexity and subtlety, so that depending on your own
personal perspective you will glean a different message
from this totally engrossing movie. I would love to write
more as this profound movie has opened up many avenues of
thought in my mind but I fear it might affect the way you
perceive the film yourself. One final thing I will say is
that I loved the reversing roles of the scientist and the
theologian. Awesome. "They should have sent a
poet"
- Men In Black - 7/10 -Saturday 20th of
September 1997 - Cessnock. It was Becky Porteus birthday
so tonight was a night out with the Porteus clan. We took
Heidis' Grandma with us, she hadn't been to the movies
for fifteen years!! (The last movie she saw was The
Man From Snowy River!!) Men in Black was a good
laugh. It was basically Ghost Busters
with aliens instead of ghosts. Will Smith was good as
always and the special effects were sensational. I really
liked the last 30 seconds the bit where you find out that
the Universe is actually just a Spacey in some
intergalactic game of marbles. Just a reminder :- Don't
Believe the Hype.
- Face/Off - 8/10 - Saturday
6th September 1997 - Maitland. This is one of the best
action movies I have seen. It was great seeing John
Travolta trying to act like Nicholas Cage and Nicholas
Cage trying to act like John Travolta. Mad gun slinging
action, explosions, chase scenes and awesome special
effects. Note from Heidi Beware the Hollywood
ending.
- Sling Blade - 7/10 - Saturday 23rd
August 1997 - Walker Cinema North Sydney. This movie has
been highly rated by many of the movie critics, however it
left me with a strange feeling inside. Sling Blade is an
extremely sad and emotional movie, that is played out
before your eyes at an extremely slow pace, enabling you
to know intimately all the characters involved. At the
films climatic ending I wasn't sure if I should feel
happy or sad, angry or relieved, or mystified and
bewildered, least of all who I should have these feelings
for. A provoking film that has very strong characters. An
interesting look at the difference between right and
wrong through the eyes of a simple man.
- Absolute Power - 7/10 - Sunday 17th
August 1997 - Maitland. Clint Eastwood is a champion.
What makes this movie special is what the characters
don't say. As Heidi said a few weeks back so many
Hollywood movies are spoilt by crappy dialog. For once
this movie didn't presume the audience were idiots and it
made all the difference. Absolute Power was filled with a
lot of really subtle jokes that must have been tempting
to destroy with mindless dialogic. Luckily Clint as
director made some clever decision and hence made a very
entertaining movie. Classic moment was Clints facial
expressions when he was locked in the vault behind the
two way mirror.
- Thrill Ride - IMAX - 7/10 -
Sunday 10th August 1997 - Imax Theatre Sydney. Some
amazing scenes as you ride some of the worlds craziest
rollercoasters. But just when you're really starting to
feel as if your actually riding a rollercoaster they
switch over into documentary mode and destroy the
illusion. Very cool though all the same.
- Con-Air -7/10 - Sunday 20th July 1997 -
Greater Union Macquarie Centre. This movie has been
advertised for what seems like well over a year.
Succumbed to the advertising pressure when we saw a Sky
Writer advertising the movie at Soccer on Saturday. A big
time Action spectacular. What makes this movie, is the
awesome assembly of bad arse Cons (Played by a long list
of very recognisable actors) and some well written lines.
Once again though I think the movie was spoiled a bit by
chucking in throwaway lines that make you think
"Geez that's corny" and brings the magical
curtain of the film crashing down around you. All I can
say is "Thankyou for choosing CON-AIR" and
"Sit back and enjoy the flight"
- Chasing Amy - 9/10 -
Thursday 17th of July 1997 - Walker Cinema North Sydney.
Saw this on the strength of Clerks and Mall Rats. AWESOME
AWESOME movie. The central theme to this movie is a hell
of a lot more serious than that of Clerks and Mall Rats
but the dialogic is just as legendary. Banky is the most
miserable character in a film since Cameran in Ferris
Buellers Day Off. A must see.
