Overview:
This is the first LSU album. I would say that this lp is a major turning point in Knott's career. It's the last recprs that I would consider "dated" and it is a lot deeper work, compared to songs like "Christian Twister" from the Livesavor years. An underground following developed due to the intensity of this lp and for the bands insane concerts. It is also the first Mike Knott album that shows his genius as a musician. It turned a lot of heads, even to the point that it was one of the few knott allbums that have been reprinted to date.
song by song obssessive analysis:
Jordan River:
good song to start with, the chorus goes: "Jordan River is chilly and cold, meet you brother on the other side". It has a really good feel and in the end Knott screams "on the other SIDE!!!!". Oh yeah, there's they guy we know.
Bye Bye Color: This is one of my favorite songs LSU has ever done. It is dark and you just kinda sit and listen to it until the chorus and then you sing like crazy...or maybe that's just me... "there's an old man in my backyard, so cold is his flesh like an ivory fire"
Die Baby Die:
a live version of this song was on "Bring it Down Now". One of the paintings in the liner notes is about this song too, it's basically about turning your life around. Tell your dad it's like the Petra song "Killing my old man"....
Lonely Boy: Ahhh here's the 80s, but not in a bad way. The lyrics are really deep. it is the type of song that you just have to hear..."He laughs just like a clown can and pretends he is a man."
Our Time Has Come: Here is the Christian power ballad! It's a good song, but definately in the old Lifesavors style. "Our Time has come, so kiss the cleaver. Your god is dead our God will never leave us"
Tether to Tassel: Another live song on "Bring it Down Now". the live version is a really high energy performance, whereas this one is..well..winy. But it goes well with the song, though and overall gives it a different feel. really good song.
I'm Torn: this is another 80s song. The fact that it's kind of "dated" may make it hard for some people to enjoy, but if you listen with an open mind, you will be blown away. Lyrically, I think it is one of the best on the album.
Plague of Flies: remixed on..you guessed it, "Bring it Down Now". The remix isn't that much different from the original, mainly they just threw in some new voice tracks. it's short it's cool and when you've finished listening to the cd, I guarruntee you will go back and hear this song one more time.
More to life: this is good music. at Cornerstone 91 Mike Knott said that this song is about Record Companies that rip their artists off "you know who you are"...this is a song I wish they put on "Bring it Down Now" instead of a busy signal....
Shaded Pain: ok. this is it. the whole album leads up to this song and you won't be dissapointed. in fact you will just sit there and stare. I can't describe it. Amazing...I'm tellin ya, you'll be hypnotized. I'll give you three guesses what other album this song was put on.
