SOUNDGARDEN LIVE..
.. the band in the flesh; even better than vinyl..

>

JANUARY 19TH, 1997 was like a second christmas for me.. i was going to see Soundgarden for the first time and i was so very excited.. waking up at the crack of dawn i went down to the Gold Coast, where the very first Big Day Out 1997 of of Australia that year was to be held..
Tickets were $55 + booking fees and they sold out.. yet the organisers decided to let 20,000 more people in to the Gold Coast Parklands.. CRAZY! As well as other really good bands there were skateboarding displays, rides, stalls and lots of yummy food. There were other styles of music too (like a certain area for dance and techno), but i didn't check that out. There were lots of freaks about hehehe.. some people went a little over the top in 'standing out'.. There were a couple fully-grown fairies and your average amount of Marilyn Manson look-alikes.
OK i saw a whole bunch of other bands too, but what i'd been waiting for (SOUNDGARDEN) was on at 9.00pm and i got there at 9.00am.. so i sat thru (or should i say "moshed thru") Aquanaught, Insurge, Supergrass, Powderfinger, You Am I, Patti Smith, The Prodigy and The Offspring before SOUNDGARDEN came onto the stage..
It was Matt Cameron, that i saw first of all and then the rest of the boys came out.. looking as fine as all hell.. i was as close as i could get.. holding onto the barrier and i took these photos too; Barely keeping a hold of the camera with my sweaty hand... They started the show with Spoonman, one which everyone would know i guess.. and they really looked excited to be here. Especially Chris, who'd do a kinda cheeky grin everynow and then.. and Ben was kind of wild too..

My Wave went off!!! God it rocked!! heheheheh The next song was Searching With My Good Eye Closed and i was really glad they played some of their older stuff.. not too much from Down On the Upside..
Here is the POSSIBLE order of songs...

  • Spoonman
  • My Wave
  • Searching with my good eye closed
  • Pretty Noose
  • Rusty Cage
  • Black Hole Sun (accoustic!)
  • Fell On Black Days
  • Helter Skelter
  • Blow up the Outside world..
  • Ty Cobb
  • Outshined..
  • .. and Jesus Christ Pose as the encore

DRIPPING with sweat, dehydrated, tired and happy i went home... hahahahah IT ROCKED!!

THREE DAYS later ... and i experienced them again..

FINE AS EVER and with tons more songs, i loved it... especially BURDEN IN MY HAND which never sounded so good.. *sigh*

if u get the chance, see them! (i guess this isn't possible today)

Okay i used to have in big letters here "I touched Chris Cornell after the show", when now that i think of it, it wasn't that big of a deal. I saw the guys come out the side door and Chris was signing things and in attempts to get him to sign something i accidentally brushed him. There, no big deal. hehehe
