Q. We've heard rumours you've been on secret recording missions to England, is this true?
A. No! Not me. AJ and Kevin have been recording and producing in London. They came, stayed for a few days and flew out again. I would have loved to have been with them, but I was recording songs in Orlando and Los Angeles.
Q. What are you all recording songs for?
A. Our new album. We're working on it until Christmas and it's going to be great. It's a really good album - believe me, you'll love it.
Q. Have you recorded your duet with Aaron yet?
A. I can't say, cos we've decided to keep it top secret. What I can say is that I was in a recording studio in Los Angeles and so was he!
Q. Aaron hasn't released a single for ages. Where is he?
A. He's working on a new album. He wants to come back in February but it's important that he's happy with what he's doing.
Q. You were recently honoured by your hometown of Orlando for being such superstars. How did that feel?
A. Cool. Really, really cool. We were given the keys to the city. They're actually huge keys so we couldn't actually open any doors with them! It's more of a symbolic thing, you know. It means we are officially important!
Q. Do you go to all the theme parks when you're back home in Orlando?
A. We used to go. But recently we've been too busy. I actually live near Tampa, which is about three hours from Orlando, so it's not easy. But I would like to go back to the parks - I want to go on the Space Mountain ride, it's meant to be really cool. When I was little I was scared by rides like the ghost train, but not now. Now I'll go on anything!
Q. Would you take a girl on a date to a Disney Park?
A. Mmm, maybe. But it's not very original is it? I would get recognised by all the people and that would be really embarrassing for her, right? I'd take her to this beach near where I live and have a picnic, that's much better!
Q. You're a right old softy, aren't you?
A. Yep, I guess you could say that! My mom taught me to treat people right and that means everyone. I think you should always be polite. I think I'm really considerate.
Q. Have you got a girlfriend?
A. I have had, but not at the moment. You have to understand how busy we are. It's crazy right now. I'm really looking forward to Christmas because then we can relax. After that we start work on a new tour to promote the album. The tour will be massive and we're going to go all over the world. I can't wait!
TP: WHAT MADE YOU WRITE THE HEART AND SOUL OF NICK CARTER- SECRETS ONLY A MOTHER KNOWS?
JC: I was on tour with the Boys and saw how interested the fans were in Nick. I felt this was the way to give the fans a really in-depth look into what Nick really is.
TP: NICK, WERE YOU A LITTLE NERVOUS WHEN YOUR MOM TOLD YOU SHE WAS GOING TO WRITE A BOOK ABOUT YOU?
NC: Of Course. But it really wasn't anything to worry about. We did collaborate on it. She would always give me input on things that were going in.
TP: YOUR MOM WRITES ABOUT YOUR INTEREST IN JOINING THE MILITARY. WILL WE BE SEEING A GI NICK IN THE FUTURE?
NC: I wanted to be a navy SEAL or join some type of special forces. My father was in the army. But having my mom by my side, she's not gonna want me to do that.
TP: ACCORDING TO YOUR MOM, YOU USED TO BE AN OUTCAST.
NC: I had a rough time in school. I was into acting and music, so there were certain times when I had to step out of school. The kids would notice me leaving, and I think that made them jealous. But I'm not the kind of person who would go back and say, "Ha, Ha, Ha! Look at what I've done!" To all the people who used to pick on me in school, this is my way of saying I am doing something that I love.
TP: JANE, NICK IS ONLY 18, YET YOU'VE ALREADY WRITTEN HIS LIFE STORY. ANY CHANCE OF A SEQUEL?
JC: That's a possibility. He's got a lot ahead of him: He might go into movies and TV, and he's talked about being a basketball star. Who knows what he's going to do next? I just encourage him to follow his dream.
D.J.: (phone ringing) Don't say who it is. He's gotta know our voice by now.
Nick: What's up?!?
D.J.: What's up buddy, Nick?!?
Nick: Oh no
D.J.: Are we in Chicago or what?!?
Nick: OH NO!
D.J.: Ladies and gentlemen, Nick Carter from the backstreetboys, what's up Nicky?
Nick: Howdy Dody?
D.J.: Where's your mama?
Nick: She's right here
Jane: I'm right here
D.J.: Hi Jane, how are u?
Jane: I'm good
D.J.: Do we call u Jane, or mom, or what should we call u?
Jane: U can call me ... mom.
D.J.: Mom, I like that! Now wait a minute, Who's riding who's coat-tails here? U have a new book called The Heart and Soul of Nick Carter. Now are u taking advantage of your boy here?
Jane: Actually, I'm just trying to share who he is with his fans.
D.J.: Well thats good cause they all want to know. We've been finding that out. How does it feel to have a heart throb baby? Do u fight to keep the girls away?
Jane: I'm just really proud of him. I think he's pretty well balanced. He knows the difference between right and wrong and to have him be a heart throb, it gives me a lot of pride to know that so many people and so many girls admire him.
D.J.: You've got a couple of them actually.
Jane: Yeah, oh yeah. I've got Aaron too.
D.J.: When Nicky wasa lil' boy, what did he want to be?
Nick: I wanted to be in the Navy.
D.J.: Are u serious?
Nick: I wanted to be in some type of ... it says it in the book too. I wantd to be a seal.
D.J.: A Navy Seal? U know I was always jealous in the playground cause all the other kids could do the (making gun noises) the lil machine gun noises, and I couldn't.
Nick: (laughing) I was that one
D.J.: Do it
Nick: (still laughing) I can't do it
D.J: ok, I read something in the book that, Nicky u were into tap dancing when the other guys were into sports, is that true?
Nick: Yeah I was into tap dancing. I really couldn't do it that well. Really that's my weakest point, was probably dancing, perid. I really wasn't that well of a dancer.
D.J.: But that was the 1st quote we heard, was while all the other boys were playing baseball, he was tap dancig. Mom, your making him look like a wuss. (all laughing)
Jane: Well it was hard on him at the time because he wanted to do it. He just wanted to be this performer, but he got ridiculed, so he had to keep everything secret from his friends.
D.J: Do we hear much about the dad in this book, or where is the dad? I'm sorry if I don't know, but we don't hear much about him
Jane: Well that's cause he's...
Nick: He's a man undercover
Jane: That's cause he likes to lay low
D.J: But u still are married?
Jane: Oh yeah!
D.J: So there's a good nuclear family. Know wonder he's got such a good up bringing
Jane: Been married for 19 years
D.J: Was he a bad boy? Did he get in trouble at all?
nick: Yeah I did
Jane: Yeah he did
D.J: Alright Nick, were u ever grounded?
Nick: Listen out of 365 days in the year, I was grounded probably 363 days
D.J: Do u remember a specific incident u could think of ?
Nick:Well I mean numerous amount of things. I used to sneak in the fridge. She used to get mad at me all the time cause I would play nintendo for ridiculously long
Jane: He was addicted to it
Nick: Oh I was. She used to hide my controllers and I 'd always find them
~~Then the D.J.'s asked Nick to hang up and Jane to hold on so they could find out if they would answer 2 ques. the same.~~
D.J: Ques. 1, what was the girl who gave Nick his 1st kiss?
Jane: Oh I know this, Brin.
D.J.: Ques. 2, When he was born, how much did he weight? Pounds and ounces.
Jane: (laughing) I wrote it in the book, but I don't remember. I think it was 8 pounds 11 ounces.
D.J: O.K. get Nick back on. What was the name of the girl who gave u your 1st kiss?
Nick: uuumm, her name was Brin, I think
D.J: ding, ding, ding! Ok, 1 more ques. on Nick Carter jeopardy, how much did u weigh, pounds and ounces, at birth?
Nick: Well I know I was a fat baby! Uuuummm, 10 pounds 9 ounces.
D.J: Well u got 1 right.
Jane: Well I've had 5 kids, so it's kinda hard to remember.
D.J: Wow, a big family. Well were gonna look for the book, The Heart and Soul of Nick Carter in Chicago book stores, on sale now.
Nick: Yup!
D.J: Listen Nicky, thanks for taking our call.
Interview with Nick (Live & Kicking)
When did you last use "unsavoury" language?
I don't swear THAT often. My parents brought me up to think it's a bad thing and it usually never even crosses my mind. The strongest I get is shouting "darn!" or "shoot!"
If you could be someone else who would you choose?
Lookswise, I'm pretty much happy with the way I am. If other people don't think I look good then who cares. It's the way I feel about myself that matters.
So you're feeling full-on confident right now?
Yep! So confident I don't have to worry about it!
What's your sexiest bit?
I dunno...(Nick goes bright red) It's hard to judge for yourself, isn't it. I'd probably have to say my hair. I don't take a lot of time over it but people seem to like the way it looks. I used to swim all time at home in Florida so the chlorine and sun turned it blond, but now I dye it to keep the highlights in.
Do you own a piece of jewellery that's extra special to you?
Yeah, a BsB pendant on a gold chain. Our manager gave us one each as a thank you for our hard work. I'm not wearing it though. I keep important possessions in a safe place 'cos I get pretty worried about losing sentiment stuff.
Are you a good kisser?
(Coming over all bashful) Hmmm, how can I answer this question? Nah, I don't think I am. I mean, I don't have a special kissing technique or anything, I just do whatever comes naturally. It's been a long time since I've kissed anyone, so I'm way out of practise at the moment.
Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to be a girl?
It's gone through my mind a few times, nothing too specific just thought about the kinda stuff I'd have to put up with. I definitely reckon that boys have it easier 'cos they don't have to have babies and stuff. I've heard that's meant to be pretty bad from what my mom's told me.
How often do you lie in interviews?
(Cue a torrent of cheeky sniggers) 30%! Nah 20%! Only little lies where I don't tell the whole truth. But you know what, I've been honest in this interview about 98% I'd say...NO! Even more honest then that - 100% honest!
Is there anything you really hate being asked about?
(Goes all coy again) Girls and stuff like that. Questions like, "Do you have a girlfriend?". See how honest I'm being now! It's not that I don't want to tell people things about myself it's more that I find it really embarrassing talking about stuff like that.
OK, if you could write the questions what would you kick off with?
Something on Nintendo. Erm (thinks for a minute), "if you could make your own Nintendo game what would it be like?" then this is how I'd answer it: "I'd probably base the game on the comic I've drawn and it'd involve the characters I've based on each of the guys" You know that'd be pretty neat!
Do you ever feel you don't have any control over your life?
Sometimes, but I know there's no point complaining. I do get really frustrated and end up yelling at the other guys but only to get things off my chest. It does help.
Ever thrown a showbizzy tantrum?
No. I know when to hold certain things in. I prefer to talk things through before they get that bad.
If we could take one personal problem away from you right now, what would that be?
Truthfully, I don't have any major problems, but I wish I had more time to do my own things like practise basketball and see my family. In fact if you could give me an extra day in the week, that'd be cool!
Seeing as you don't get time for relationships do you find you think more or less about sauciness?
I don't have time to think about any rude thoughts.Let alone, do anything about it!
What's the most outrageous proposition you've ever had from a girl?
Nothing outrageous, but when I was in New York this model asked me out to dinner. She was really beautiful but I had to turn her down 'cause I didn't have time.
Did you feel slightly narked that the Spice Girls hit it big in America before you?
Not at all. It's not that big deal. I mean, it's not like we're fighting to get there first.
Are your family prepared for hundreds of fans camping outside your house?
Yeah. We've had to put up a huge gate already. I don't think my mum'll be making them cups of tea though. She'd need a truckload of tea bags!
How much more famous can you get?
As famous as anyone out there wants us to be. But I don't care if we don't become humungously huge, as long as we're happy and doing what we want.
Do you get upset when your records don't hit the top 10?
No...I don't expect it...When our first single came out in America it only made the top 60 but I was still proud.
How's your comic book coming on?
It's not. It's so frustrating 'cause I still haven't had time to do anything with it. I sometimes say to our manager, 'Gimme some time out!' but I know deep down I can't have everything. I've just gotta keep going with the group.
When one day it's finally over, how will you cope with not spending every day with the other BsBs?
I don't think it'll ever be over with us. There might be a time when we have a break from the band but we're all friends - as close as brothers- so we'd still be together. That's the best thing about it. When you hear about other groups ending everything, they go their separate ways. We won't be like that. Me and Brian even talk about buying houses next-door to each other.
Sum up in one phrase how you feel right now.
Tired! I stayed up late last night watching Mad Max in the hotel room.
How late?
Er...only 1.30am.
That's not exactly wild rock'n'roll, is it?
'Exclusive' interview with Nick Carter.
Q: Nick, why are you the most popular BSB and how do you feel about this status?
A: "I don't know why I'm the most popular BSB. I'm actually kinda sick of being chased around by hormone crazed girls! I'm just a kid! I really wish I had more privacy, and while on tour. I definately need all the time I get to spend alone!"
Q: Nick, what kind of car would you buy since you just go your driver's license.
A: "When we spend more time in the U.S. I'm going to buy me a corvette. It's been my dream car ever since I was three! Brian has a Z-28 Camero, but he's never around to drive it."
Q: Who taught you to play the drums? A band member? Teacher?
A: "I taught myself how to play the drums..well, not totally, I did have the help of the school band teacher...I never took private lessons though" (pretty I would say non?)
Q: Nick, the BSBs are famous for wearing brand-name clothing, what designer label or type of clothes do you enjoy wearing?
A: My favourite clothes are definately the most comfortable! As far as I can see it, Starter B-ball Jerseys and a T-Shirt are the way to go! But if you want a designer label, it would have to be Tommy Hilfiger"
Q: There are many males out there that dislike the BSBs, why do think this is so? And how do you deal with it?
A: I can't understand why so many guys dislike us! But I'm a non-chalant kinda guy, so I don't dislike them for it, I just don't understand."
Q: I've noticed that during your QPG video, it seems that you were lip-synching. Do you ever lip-synch in your concerts though?
A: No, we never lip-synch during live concerts. However, in the videos you may notice a bit of time-lapse between our mouths and the words... that's because the recording is done in a studio, and is dubbed over the video. That is typical among all music videos."
Q: What kinda reactions do you get from fans when they meet you guys?
A: "Embarrassment! You'd be surpised at how many fans pass out when they see us! I get really embarrassed when fans scream my name, but I've learned to ignore it!"
Q: Where did Kevin get all his rings from, I've been running ragged across Toronto, trying to find exact copies!!
A: "Kevin bought all of his rings at some German Flea Market. It might be a bitch for you to try and get them." (no doubt about that!!!)
Q: Do any of the BSBs surf the internet and if they do, what do they think of their fan's homepages?
A: "No, none of the guys surf the net besides me. Most of the time its when they're out clubbing. No one leaves messages in guestbooks, and I don't believe in visiting any sites related to our group."
Q: Nick's I've heard that you're afraid of the dark. Is this true and do you practice the universal defence mechanism employed by all children of the world? (i.e. crawling under the covers and covering EVERY part of their body in the hopes of preventing a monstrous attack and barely breathing through a small hole?)
A: "Yes, I am afraid of the dark, and I sleep with my head under the covers...how embarassing.. I have come to grips that gremlins aren't gonna eat my toes though!"
Q: What do you have to say to people who are just starting out in the music business?
A: "I have two things to say to people starting out...follow your dreams and it's all good."
Q: I've heard that you may not visit Asia this year. Seeing how your audience in Asia is substantial when will you visit and tour?
A: We'll be in Asia in early 1998. I hope our Asian fans will understand!"
Q: The BSB audience range is somewhat limited to teenage girls. How will you expand your horizons and hope to conquer and wider audience like Boyz II Men?
A: We are still targeting the same age group (14-25) but will be trying to attract more male fans..."
