These are my favorite movies, and I've included some sound clips too,
All sounds are in wav format.
Starting with comedy, my favorite genre. Note, these are not ranked in any particular order.
Austin Powers. Yeah baby, yeah. This movie provided me with an entirely new way of speaking.
I love Dr. Evil. An evil love? Perhaps. I saw this one opening night, and remember thinking it was
ok, but not great. The thing is, I ended up seeing it again and again, and each time it got funnier
and funnier. Imagine the first moment you saw Mr. Bigglesworth with no hair. Remember how that felt?
And what about the group therapy session? And when he talked to the UN...
"I did not go to six years of evil medical school to be called Mister,
thank you very much." There are entirely too many funny moments in this movie to list them all.
The Princess Bride. This is probably my favorite of the lot. The book is spectacular,
much funnier than the movie. I've read the book many times, and have seen the movie more times than
I'd care to mention. I remember in high school, watching this one with my friend Meredith and eating
Astropops. The day Andree the Giant died was a sad day for me, and I watched him as Fezzik in tribute.
I had a huge crush on Cary Elwes for years, longing for my own Westley, and have decided men like that
exist only in fairy tales. I could feed you a bunch of quotes, but if you are a person of substance,
or likely after my own heart, you already know them. Bonus: Rob Reiner directed it.
Airplane, Airplane II, and Police Academy III. I'm a huge fan of the jive scenes from Airplane and Airplane II. The danger vacuum scene from II also forces me to rewind it repeatedly, and laugh until I am blue in the face. Though these may not be that sophisticated, they are funny like the hyena. The greatest thing about Police Academy III is Bobcat Goldthwait. He is soooo funny, and crazy. One of the other great things about it is the fact that the entire budget of that movie seemed to go for the highly choreographed water chase at the end, that was entirely too long, and totally unnecessary. How cool was that? I don't like to publicly admit how much I love these movies, and how many times I've seen them :) Then again, this is public, so scratch that.
Strictly Ballroom. A great movie, this one is fakely (is that a word?) dramatic, and Paul Mercurio wears a wife-beater like no one else. The whole story of this one is so cute, and you have to love the costumes. There is also the choice moment where our good buddy Paul throws Fran the stare, and my stomach drops every time.
National Lampoons...Vacation, Christmas Vacation, and Animal House. These are all too great. There is nothing more that needs to be said, is there? If you haven't seen any or all of these, please rush out and see them before I find out and flog you.
Swingers. I've felt Mike's anguish. I'm such the guy from that movie, only a girl. My
friend and I used to go to parties, which we'd promptly ditch and rip on. Then we'd cruise around
looking for guys, and end up playing Nintendo when we finally gave in realized there was nothing better to do.
Oh yeah, dibs on Vince Vaughn. This is a good friend-type movie.
The Blues Brothers. Aretha kicks ass! Jim and Dan as you've always seen them! Carrie Fisher as you've always wanted to! Great soundtrack! "We're on a mission from God."
When Harry Met Sally. Hello, I live this movie. No movie better gets to the nature of relationships than this one. This prize is directed by Rob Reiner (my favorite director), and this is a good movie to watch with your girlfriends when feeling sorry for yourself, or even when you are happy. It's that cool. This is up on the super-favorites list with The Princess Bride. If you haven't seen this one, I'm going to cry. I know this is a chick movie, but let me be.
Bull Durham. Another good relationshippy movie. I *even* have the quote where Crash Davis states his beliefs. 338 kb
The Sure Thing. Yet another Rob Reiner one. This has John Cusack in that typical 80's angst-filled role he's so great in. Another bonus: a small part with Tim Robbins. Plot: boy hears about a sure thing, boy travels across the country to meet this sure thing, boy falls in love with girl he fights with along the way. Yeah, and they shotgun beer.
So I Married an Axe Murderer. Mike Myers at his finest. Many good quotes and bad poetry
from here. Did you know that over half of this movie was reshot when test audiences didn't like the
original sneak preview?
Better Off Dead. "I want my two dollars!"29 kb
Mallrats. This one got ripped on, but I think it's funny. Where else will a little kid get stuck in an escalator, an Easter bunny get beaten up, and Stan Lee give advice on love than in a Kevin Smith movie? Tell me that one. That part at the end where Jason Lee is on that dating game part and keeps saying strange things has me in hysterics every time.
Say Anything. John again! This is the epitome of the 80's teenage love story. They also play "In Your Eyes," the Peter Gabriel song that everyone loves. No kidding, I've never met a person who didn't say "I love this song," after it started playing.
Now for Drama
Titanic. This movie is huge. I loved the story. I saw this one opening night, and I think that was the best way to see it, before word of mouth built it up so much. Seeing this in a theatre with people talking around you who aren't into the movie is most irritating. See it with someone you love, and then feel really sad afterward. The first time I saw this, I had a lump in my throat for a few days afterward. Billy Zane in a tux is also a pleasurable sight, and I'd never liked Leonardo before seeing this. One final thing, Kate Winslet's costumes were beautiful.
Chasing Amy. This because one of my favorites after seeing it multiple times. It really grew on me. It's probably more of a comedy, but this movie is touching, funny, poignant, and really worth seeing.
Memphis Belle. The babe-fest of the century, in a great friendship WWII movie.
And others...
It Happened One Night and The Wizard of Oz. The token oldies. I loved both of them. Clark Gable is so dapper.
True Romance. Action, violence, Val Kilmer as Elvis.
Top Gun. Tom Cruise at his finest, I've loved this movie since it came out. Val Kilmer as Ice-Man is a sight to behold.
Grease. I can't believe this got re-released! I'm so excited. I used to watch this every afternoon. My brother points out that I also forced him to watch it. If you think you are cooler than Danny Zuko, you're fooling yourself.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Oklahoma. My favorite happy-time musicals, after Grease. If you can watch either of these and not sing along, you have far more self-control than I.
Dirty Dancing. I was 13 when this came out, and wasn't allowed to watch it. So then I went to a friend's house...hehe. I'm so sneaky. How can you not enjoy this movie?
Tombstone--the good parts version. This means fast-forwarding to all the Doc Holliday parts,
the bad-ass walk, and the part where the Hubba-Bubba sheriff dies.
Desperado. This is best watched in fast forward, but I like the guitar case, and I like the guitar parts.
Sleeping Beauty, The Jungle Book and Robin Hood. My three favorite cartoons. Maleficent caused me many nightmares, I love The Jungle Book's music, and Robin Hood is just cool.
Army of Darkness. "Give me some sugar, baby." "The name's Ash, housewares." "Little goody two shoes! Little goody two shoes!"
