A Crowdies guide to matching the right drink with the right song.

Wine buffs will bore you senseless with their constant drivel about smelling the aromas of old wool and gooseberries in a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. They will then proceed to tell you it would go magnificently with roast duck and baked potatoes. But they do have a point--alcohol does pair up well with other things, including (but not limited to) Crowded House songs!

In honour of this column's title "drown it in alcohol," this month we will delve into the song "Can't Carry On," and find a drink which would be perfect to imbibe during its three minutes and thirty four seconds.

With lyrics like this...

Why do I kid myself
Why do I scream for pleasure
It's four in the morning, should know better

...the song lends itself to a cocktail, something big and thick, which should get you to sleep by three and a half minutes past four. So, naturally it requires Irish Cream (Baileys, or similar).

Can't carry on this way
Before it gets too late
Doing damage to my brain
Well here we go again

To empathise with the character, the drink will reqire something highly alcoholic, such as Cointreau. Let's deal to those brain cells.

Drown it in alcohol
Stuck in the elevator
Hard to remember in the morning

And now to top it off--by drowning it in alcohol--to ensure you don't remember any of this in the morning: a dash of vodka.

Free yourself from the burden of inaction by grabbing a nice big tumbler, and tossing in a few ice cubes. Fill the glass with one fifth cointreau, then carefully add three fifths Irish Cream. It should float on the Cointreau (use a spoon to guide the Irish Cream onto the cointreau if necessary). Then in a similar fashion, float one fifth of a glass of vodka on the top.

Mmmmmm-mmmmmmmmm!

If you're in the mood to listen, take your "CCO Cocktail" down to the stereo, slam in your "Crowded House" CD, skip to track 8, turn up the voume, and start sipping...

Enjoy the song, and enjoy the drink.

Till next month,

Brandi Alexandre
