Belle and Sebastian @ Manchester Town Hall 27.12.97
Take the songwriting of Simon and Garfunkel, the rock and roll attitude of Thora Hird add small,
select crowds, and lots of press hype and you end up with Belle and Sebastian. The sweet innocent
hummings of Stuart only add to the twee, all things nice image they portray. If you believe what you
read, they’ll be big. If you believe what you hear, they’ll be just another hyped up band which fell
beside the third hurdle, (called songs that would enter the charts highly). That is, until they write that
one song which breaks them. Sadly, I can’t see them breaking into a clone of Tubthumping! Still, it’s a
thought. (Rod)
