THE DANDYS
"I WANNA BE LIKE YOU"

THE DANDYS @ LOUSIANA, BRISTOL
21st NOVEMBER 1997 REVIEW

THIS REVIEW WAS WRITTEN COURTESTY OF THOMAS BETTS

The Dandy's were quite late arriving at the venue, causing the doors to be 40 minutes or so late opening. Not really a problem though. On entering a local Bristol band 'Freeway' were getting ready to play. Something about them seemed quite quite wrong, their mix of quiet ambient female vocals and mashed up rock riffs just didn't seem to go. It all seemed to clash, and the vocals were far too quiet which meant it was impossible to work out any of the lyrics. It was actually quite a relief when they left the stage! The Dandy's came on to quite a large crowd response, although not in the form of moshing except from a couple of individuals. The venue was quite empty, which seemed insane for such fantastic bands. They started with an instrumental introduction quite heavily based on the keyboard and then kicked in with their all power pop single 'I Wanna Be Like You'. The harmonica and guitar combine so nicely it made me want to explode. Next up the track 'Drag Queen', a bit too similar to the first single - but without the harmonica and still showing a huge amount of talent. Still to come was their new single out next year 'You Make Me Wanna Scream', showing a slightly darker side to the Dandy's. With red strobes and deeper chords the track made a heavy impression on me, definitely a single to watch out for. In with another familiar track 'Dirty Weekend', reaching 76 in the UK Singles Chart this catchy tune had many a person singing a long. Another possible single 'English Country Garden' seemed familiar and had showed almost as much excitement as their other new single. 'Merry-Go-Round' is one of the catchiest songs ever written. Their set came to a close with the rather funky 'Johnny Fox' - a song to end all others! The Dandy's know how to play a gig, they have power and adrenaline flowing through the set - unfortunately not quite redeemed by the crowd in Bristol.
