#boston.org on IRC

Need help getting there?

If you already know what IRC is, and how to get there, then you are hereby invited to join us at #boston.org on ZiRC.org.

For those of you who do not know what the IRC is, or how to get to it, this brief explantation attempts to instruct you on how to get there and what to do once you are there. This is by no means a comprehensive instruction manual. You are encouraged to read the help and readme files included with all software. Remember, IRC is a free speech forum. Don't be surprised if you see stuff that offends you. First Amendment and all that. The bad is mixed in with the good.

It's been about 6 years since I last revamped this page. Originally, I had all sorts of stuff about SLIP accounts, ircII for UNIX, DCC transfers, wavs, and a miriad of other information that is now outdated.

In the interest of simplicity, I will only be explaining one way to connect to IRC. I will attempt to do it in layman's terms so it's easier to understand.

I

Download the software

First of all, you need to go to the mIRC site to download the software so that you can get on to IRC. I have set the link to open in another window so you can more easily come back to this one and pick up after you have completed this step.

www.mirc.org

If you are unclear on how to download, or how to find what you downloaded, or how to install programs, you need to seek more detailed help.

II

Install the software

Depending on how your browser handled the mIRC download, it either ran it automatically or it saved the file, in which case you need to find it and run it to start the install process.

I recommend selecting all the default options during the install process. Just makes things easier.

III

Configure, Connect and Get to the channel

One channel denizen "JC_Scott" put together an excellent step by step process complete with screenshots. I'll simply redirect you to his page and you can follow from that point on.

J.C.'s page

Good Luck, and we'll see you on the channel.

One day, I'll include more detailed info on the many things you can do once you are on channel. If you have questions, email me at the address at the bottom of the page. You will have to remove "-removethis-" out of the address for it to work. (I put that there in a an attempt to cut down on spam.)
