Developing Your Own Style

With so many drummers in mainstream music today, finding your own style can be difficult. While plagiarizing a drum style is not recommended, it is not all that taboo to mix and match. After all, one's personal style is a compilation of likes and dislikes in any aspect of life. Consider your possibilities; the hard hitting, pronounced bass drum of John Bonham, the blazing stick speed of Neil Peart, the innovative fills of Ian Paice, and the progressive style of Mike Portnoy. You get the picture. Listen to your favorite drummers, then listen to drummers you don't normally listen to on a regular basis. Some required listening, along with the aforementioned, would be; Buddy Rich, Steve Gadd, Carmine Appice, Tommy Aldridge, Ainsley Dunbar, and Vinnie Appice, just to name a few. With the mix and match method, you will put together a style that suits you best, with a little help from your friends. |
