Bad news week for
Triple J?
Article from the Sydney
Morning Herald - Friday 6th November '98.
The big man of public
radio, Mikey Robins, has plunged Triple J management into a nail-biting
bout of uncertainty after telling them he may not renew his contract.
Robins, the longest-serving breakfast announcer on the Js, said
his future on radio depends how many specials ABC TV commissions
for 1999. The Saturday shows, cobbled together to fill the hole
left by Roy and HG, proved to be a ratings winner this year. "We
had a lot of fun doing it," Robins said. "Suddenly, a glorified
parlour game is a huge hit." But he's still waiting to hear the
verdict from the notoriously leisurely TV management ("only fiords
move slower...") about what his TV commitments for 1999 would be.
He'll let Triple J know the score then. "I just said to them [Triple
J management] I'd let them know Wednesday," Robins said, with an
enormous belch. "I am being a bit of a prick with Triple J. But
after seven years I think I can afford to be. If there is more TV
work on next year I am probably going to concentrate on that." Robins
has contemplated life after Triple J and he reckons the station
will survive without his "tiny" contribution. "There's more than
enough talent there," he said. "A couple of years ago there was
pretty much just Sandy [Sandman] and I, and Roy and HG at weekends.
Now they've got Adam Spencer in there and Merrick and Rosso - the
station is looking good. If I was to move on I could at least do
it knowing that there were good people at the station." A Triple
J spokesperson wouldn't comment about Robin's future. She said next
year's line-up would be announced next week (presumably on or after
Wednesday). It's believed there are also clouds over the future
of plait brat Jane Gazzo's nightly gig and the Sunday night spot
held by the affable Francis Leach, who presents Creatures. Robins,
meanwhile, also plans to do more writing next year (following the
publication of a book he wrote with two other fat blokes this year).
And he's got a wedding to look forward to, followed by a honeymoon
in Japan. "We think we might go over there for the sumo..."
