October-November 1999

Oct/Nov 99:
Sami Hyypia

Past Winners:
Aug 99 - Robbie Fowler
Sep 99 - Danny Murphy

Sami Hyypia
Hyypia's profile here.

Sami Hyypia formed a formidable partnership with Stephane Henchoz in the heart of Liverpool's defence. Brought in to fill the gaps in the Reds' porous defence, the giant Finn has not disappointed us.

His consistent displays provided a much needed boost and lifted the Reds to 5 wins in 6 games from late October to late November. His understanding with Henchoz has also improved Liverpool's defensive record. By late November, the team boasted the league's second-best defence. An improvement indeed for a team with an infamously weak backline known for conceding soft gaols.

Oct/Nov 99:
Michael Owen

Past Winners:
Sep 99 - Michael Owen (35.2%)

Michael Owen
Owen's profile here.

Michael Owen may have been the press' target after England's 0-1 loss to Scotland but he bounced back in fine fashion, scoring a great goal against Sunderland. Liverpool's Golden Boy may just be feeling the pressure of being Michael Owen and a string of injuries may not have helped his cause, but he remains a firm favourite with the fans.

In October and November, the England striker collected 30.7% of the votes, retaining his status as Kop favourite for the second time.

Oct/Nov 99:
Graeme Souness

Past Winners:
Sep 99 - David Beckham

Graeme Souness

He may be one of Anfield's best as a player, but such reputations count for nothing as Graeme Souness found out. Souness was named by Football 365 as Liverpool's worst manager ever.

Given the whole line of great managers who have graced the club, it is hard enough being compared to them. But in the wake of Gerard Houllier's Red Revolution, Souness' own "revolution" during his reign at Anfield naturally came to mind. It may be unfair to judge him on his questionable "revolution" but it is enough to say that he screwed up the works. Afterall, the club's downward slide began with him at the helm. And what a tragic end to a great legacy that was.
