From 1969-1971 massive rock festivals in the U.S.A gave exposure to and launched many bands
playing music that was laoted between blues and rock. Their approach to rock remained popular,
particularly in the south and midwest, well into the mid 1970's. With regional music scenes
beginnong to return in 1972, Georgia emerged as a mecca for Southern boogie bands. Among them
were the Allman Brothers, Wet Willie, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels Band and the Marchall
Tucker Band - and most of them had hits between 1973-1975.
The Marchall Tucker Band, formed in 1971 in South Carolina, certainly was one of the finest
groups in the history of Southern rock. The group was formed around Tommy Caldwell (bass, vocals)
and his brother Toy (guitar, steel guitar, vocals). Their father was a semi-professional country
musician and Toy had accompanied him for many years. Wll mebers of the Marchall Tucker Band were
childhood friends from Spartanburg, South Carolina and they were all working in various local bands when they were drafted inot military service, in 1966. Four years later, in the first month after his discharge, Toy caldwell wrote "Can't you see?", which was to become the Marchall Tucker Band's first hit single. You will find it on the Marchall Tucker Band CD "Heard it in a love song" (MPG 74019)
Besides the Caldwell brothers, the other members of the band were: George Corkle, Doug Gray,
Paul Riddle and Jerry Eubanks. The guitar style of Toy Caldwell was often compared to that of
Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers, with whom the Marchall Tucker Band toured on support in
1973 to promote their debut album.
To speak about the albums made by the Marchall Tucker Band : they all have gone gold and the
1977 album "Carolina Dreams" even went platinum. In 1979 they released the album "Running like
the wind", with the classic song "Running like the wind".
The success of the group was marred by Tommy Caldwell's death from injuries resceived in a car crash,
in 1980. He was succeeded by Franklin Wilkie and with him the Marchall Tucker Band continued to
record in the 1980's.
