OPERATION: Trompet
Besides the idea of just buying a different type of horn, I have had
two (2) different suggestions as to how I can attach the larger,
Trombone bell, to the smaller trumpet. Following are diagrams and
explanations of these suggestions.
(figure 1)
As you can see in figure 1 above, I have marked two spots, A and B,
on a sketch of an ordinary trumpet.
Most people have suggested that I attach the trombone bell at point
A. If I do this, I will have to cut both the trumpet and trombone bells
to find a place where the bore lines up nicely.
I have a bad feeling about this method. I believe that it is too risky,
because once you've cut too much off of one bell or the other,
there's no going back.
Also, some people have told me that they feel there would be odd
vibration patterns in the resonation of the bell, caused by the
awkward seam were the large bell is attached to the trumpet.
Only a few people have suggested the other method. This would be much easier and a whole lot less risky. With this method, if the result is not what I expected, I can always change the trumpet back to its original state, or try method B.
(figure 2)
Here, I have simply sketched out the necesary section of the trombne in approximately correct proportion to the trumpet. The markers A and B show the points where the bells would be attached on each of the horns.
