Dogstar is the latest alternative rock band to
make its presence
known. With their enhanced CD sampler Quattro Formaggi, Dogstar
proves it's a band that's going
places.
Bret Domrose, the
songwriter-vocalist-guitarist of this trio team, writes very impressive lyrics with
hidden messages. One has to stop grooving long enough to listen and to
understand the meaning of the songs. Each word goes a level deeper than
face value and phrases as a whole have double meanings. One can hear the
angst and frustration in Domrose's voice from Behind Her to the
tenderness he displays in the beautifully haunting love ballad 32 Stories, which takes the listener deep into the realm of Domrose's inner
feelings of unexpected love. The images that the words convey are ones we can all relate to.
Even if one never gets the different messages of love, the music of the
band keeps you on your feet. His voice is the strongest in the upbeat and
longing single Return. Within the four songs on the CD, there is
a range of tempos in the music. In Return, you can hear, feel,
and literally imagine drummer
Rob Mailhouse jamming
at his sets. The same is true for Mailhouse's fellow musician,
bassist Keanu Reeves. In the opening chords to Honesty Anyway, one can get carried away
with "air-guitar" playing and "air-drum" beating! They display such raw
energy in their music. As strong and
emotional as Domrose's voice is, he should take advantage of backup
vocalists to add harmony to the songs.
Dogstar's debut album, Our Little Visionary will debut on August 27, 1996. It will be a joy to watch this band grow and have their "little visionary" become a dream come true.
