The Wag is the venue for Camouflage, they play the best selection of Indie and alternative; Blur, Prodigy, Placebo, Manics, suede and of course classics from Nirvana and the Stone Roses. Upstairs is 'Wild' with a heavier feel - Korn, Deftones, Fear Factory the usual mix. Wild also has the better sound system and recently lost the slide-show of naked dancers, oh well.
Tunes are the best around, the sound could do with a litle improvement but it is the best place to be on a wednesday night!
Loony Toons is resident at Tuffnel Park Dome from 10 till 3 every Saturday. Dj's are Jonathan and Eko, Indie and Alternative upstairs, and the downstairs useed to be heavier but has been curtailed due to the Boston Arms wanting to have an Irish Folk night or something equally unlikely.
The sound is good and the Dj's are OK, especially having lost most of their Kula Shaker/prodigy obsession. About 3am as the lights go on they always play 'Dancing Queen'. Amusing choice since the average age of the female patronage is considerably lower than that.
Feet First is at The Camden Palace every tuesday, the best sound system you're going to hear and an amazing (did I say amazing? something of an overstatement I feel, passable perhaps?) lazer/light show that's not really going to be bettered at any other Indie club. The evening includes a live band, we've seen China Drum, Lo Fidelity Allstars and Libido to name but a few also Electrasy played for their 12th birthday celebration. There are four bars, five levels, you can watch the band from above/behind or find a quiet corner to while the night away in. Latest addition is Doug (downstairs at Loony Toons) playing 'classic' indie in the top bar, even heard him play the Beta Band!
Alcohol is £1 per bottle (Carling or selected) making for a good evening at a reasonable price. Also gives large amounts of ammunition if the band is crap (Earl Brutus!). Same DJ's as Loony Toons and generally a crowd pleasing mix of Toons although they sometimes loose it.
We went here by default; Livingstone were playing beforehand, followed by Tampasm and some others and the club kicked off later.
We should have guessed what we were in for when all the Goths arrived, but no. Lots of Korn, assorted hard stuff and Hip hop. If that's your thing go, but it's not mine! Great sound (loud!), good prices and a rather nice venue mean that if you arrive at 9pm you can catch three (or FOUR) bands then go to the club! Value for money in anyones book!
Well, at long last I got a friday free and we went! A brilliant mix of music from the Stone Roses, Primal scream, Pulp, Suede, Smiths e.t.c. as can be seen below the drinks were a little pricy as was entry but it was a good night out and not far from my bus ^_^.
It wasn't too packed either so plenty of space to dance which makes a change.
Well, this is the opposing number for Loony Toons, must be better...surely. Ok, so I've not been; my friends can't afford £6 entry! goes on till 5 tho so it should be amusing, perhapse fewer 15 year olds? go to the Popscene web site to learn more!
