With a score by Danny Elfman and Executive Production by Robert Zemeckis,
many of Jackson's long time fans found this film to be entertaining but yet
lacking in much of the sadistical humour of previous Jackson films. I'd have
to agree with this in part. It IS a good film but it seemed like something was
missing. Jackson had apparently been told by Universal to cut some of the humour
from the film. No wonder it didn't do as well at the box office as they had hoped.

The movie is original in it's storyline and there is solid writing here. The
main story revolves around conman psychic investigator Frank Bannister who's
wife dies in a car accident which he is blamed for, many years before. From
that tramautic experience he is able to see spirits. During a routine ghost
exorcising scam on a couple (Ray and Lucy) he notices a number etched into Ray's
forhead but doesn't quite understand the meaning of it until later in the film.

The numbered victim of Frank's con (Ray) soon becomes a victim of death and
seeks Frank's assistance as he missed his first opportunity at heading into the
light. Frank befrieds Ray's widow Lucy and relays messages from Ray to her over
dinner. He witnesses a death in the restaurant men's room and sees the spirit
responsible for it, a grim reaper like figure. After the death Frank storms out
of the restaurant to follow the spirit, ending up elsewhere and noticing yet
another soon to be victim complete with a number etched in her forehead.

At the police station, Milton, a paranoid F.B.I agent who launched the case is
out to nail Frank. He wants to prove Frank as the killer of the past two victims
as well as many others over the years since his wife's death. He rattles off the
tale of Frank's wife's death to Lucy, the wife of Ray the recently departed. Milton
rambles on in the effort to inform Lucy of how visciously Frank murdered his wife
after a fight.Frank brings the latest corpse into the police station and gets
questioned by Milton in regards to his whereabouts earlier that evening. As he
had been on the scene of the last death and has also been associated with the
other victims, Frank is tossed in jail.

With the aid of Lucy he escapes from jail and begins noticing the similarity of
past deaths caused by infamous orderly-turned murderer Johnny Bartlett and the
current rash of allegedly "natural" heart attack deaths. Numbers carved on the
victim's foreheads are the link to the past and the present events. It becomes
Frank's priority to get to the bottom of the murders and destroy the spirit in
order to save the lives of future victims and clear his own name.
