(Mute|Sire/Reprise|Promo)

Useless front coverDepeche Mode released 'Useless', the fourth single from their acclaimed chart topping 'Ultra' album on October 20th. The single features mixes from dance luminaries such as CJ Bolland, Kruder + Dorfmiester, Carl Craig and Mute's master of cool and sophistication Barry Adamson, plus a new single mix by Alan Moulder.

Blue handOn a technological tip each of the two CD's of the single is enhanced with CD ROM capabilities and includes the full videos to 'Barrel Of A Gun' (CD1) and 'It's No Good' (CD2). 'Useless' was written by Martin Gore, produced by Tim Simenon and features performances by guest musician Doug Wimbish (bass), Gota Yashiki (drums), Keith Le Blanc (drums) and Danny Cummings (percussion).

Featuring Dave Gahan's pensive vocals, a driving backbeat and a dirty, bluesy guitar riff by Gore, 'Useless' is the hardest rocking track on the album 'Ultra'.

'Ultra' has sold in excess of 3 million copies since release in April and topped the charts in eight countries, including the UK. The band are currently working on new material in the studio and planning a world tour for 1998, their first for nearly five years

Depeche Mode are Dave Gahan (vocals), Martin Gore (guitars, vocals) and Andy Fletcher (keyboards).

Information on "Useless" Promos

no catalog number - Promo CD Single
Useless (Edit - 4:44)
Useless (Album version - 5:12)

NOTE: This is a rather unusual release. It has a title-only front insert, no catalog number, and uses the 1983 "Depeche Mode" style logo on the CD. It looks like a bootleg, but it is official. It is also pressed on a real "silver" CD, not a recordable "gold" CD. The story behind this is that Reprise was in a rush to make this CD, so they went to a company named Quadim, who makes CD's for them quicker than other pressing plants.

no catalog number - Promo *Recordable* CD Single
Useless (Radio Version - 4:51)
* Remixed by Alan Moulder and Daniel Miller at Wittfield Street Studio, London
Useless (CJ Bolland Ultrasonar Edit - 4:06)
* Re-recorded and mixed at Bedside Lab, Belgium, by CJ Bolland

NOTE: This CD, on the other hand, is a Recordable CD. The information is printed directly onto the CD with a CD printer. If you ever hear of people selling this, or any other recent, Depeche Mode recoardable CD's, and they say the information is hand-printed, they are selling a counterfeit version. Since around May of 1997, Reprise has been machine-printing on their recordable CD's.
