With "La Masquerade Infernale", Arcturus have
successfully continued the trend of blurring the lines
between musical genres, with sometimes surprising and
constantly inspiring results. Decidedly metal, this
release has incorporated lush vocal melodies with
ethnically flavoured harmonies, though impossible to
duplicate live, that are a refreshing change from the
expected "growlies" anticipated from an underground
metal act. The guitar playing and drumming are quite
an intense experiance that seem to be very busy without
qualifying as "over-playing", only adding to the complex
soundscapes contained within. It's is difficult to find
a major flaw with this release, though the opening
track, while fitting the concept of the music, does not
live up to the quality found on the rest of the disc.
Putting it into perspective, this album is NOT for
everyone, but if there's a disc you've got to at least
hear this year, it's Arcturus.
