In 1992, Dream Theater released their now classic opus,
"Images and Words" to a world starving for musical
proficency in an era of Nirvana and STP. The record was
a huge success, garnering critical acclaim around the
globe and creating a large, loyal following of DT
hardcores. Fast forward to 1997. Where "I&W" was a
showcase of in-yer-face metal wizardry, "Falling..." is
all about textures, and the layering of sound to create
a lush sonic landscape. Gone (for the most part) are
the progressive metal masterpieces that have hooked so
many; replaced with shorter, more to the point songs
and a shocking number of ballads (4 of 11). Only the
first single ("Burning My Soul") and "Trail Of Tears"
recall the glory days of 1992. Not to say that this is
a bad album ("New Millenium" is an example of classic
Dream Theater stylings and "Just Let Me Breathe" is an
aggressive rocker showing band growth), it's just not as
dark as it's predecessors. It is this change in sound
that makes "Falling Into Infinity" harder to accept for
longtime fans, but very fulfilling with a little time,
patience, and an open mind.
