"Tracks" release

Few musicians could release a four-CD, 66-track
rarities collection and still leave fans wanting
more, but diehards will grouse that some of
Springsteen's best unreleased tracks are missing.
They'd be right, of course, but it's always been
the Boss' way or the highway. Tracks skirts too
much of his early career--zipping through material
from his first three albums before the first disc
is even finished--and is heavier on the last
decade than the material demands. That leaves
about two-and-half-discs' worth of good music.
"Santa Ana" is young, word-drunk Bruce; "So Young
and in Love" is a vintage E Street Band romp; and
the acoustic version of "Born in the U.S.A." casts
the song as the cautionary tale it was meant to
be. The uninitiated should start with the studio
albums; fans know what they must do.
