Green Day is a punk band made from the San Fransico Bay Area, in the state of Carlifonia. The band is made up of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool.
The band started out in 1987 by the name of "Sweet Children" and released an EP called "Slappy". From this EP and another one called "1000 Hours" Green Day released their first album, "39/Smooth" with Lookout! Records. In 1990, Green Day released their first album that got the band much attention, "1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours". After the release of this album and a tour, the original drummer John Kiftmyer left the band. Billie Joe and Mike went out and found a new drummer named Tre Cool.
Their next album was Kerplunk from Lookout in 1991, which made them popular nation-wide. After "Kerplunk", Green Day left Lookout! Records and signed on with Reprise Records.
Green Day's real fame began in 1994 when they released their third album "Dookie". Also in 1994, Green Day was invited to play at Woodstock '94. Shortly after that, Billie Joe got married and had a baby.
A year later, in 1995 Green day released a fourth album, "Insomniac". The album was apparently titled this because most of the songs were written during sleepless nights. After "Insomniac", Tre has also gotten married.
In 1997 Green Day released their fifth album, Nimrod, which, according to Billie Joe, is their best record ever. This album showed a little bit of a different sound from the band, especially in the song "Good Riddance".
