The Biography of Wedgie |
The
winter of December 1996 was cold and dark. With nothing better to
do 3 friends, who had met on the school bus decided they would start a
band after the down fall of a previous project known as Box. After
a failed attempt at being a guitar player Tim decided he would play the
drums. Dan already knew how to play the bass so that was all
set. All they needed was a guitarist. Dan's brother Graham was the man for the job.
The first practice was the day after Christmas. They would have gotten together earlier but Tim didn't have any cymbals for his drum kit except for a splash which he cracked and bashed a few days earlier. The practice was chaotic and just about nothing got done. Months of practice would finally lead to their very first gig. Wedgie's first live appearance ever, outside of a few stoned friends in their living room was a 17th birthday party for a good friend of theirs. The set was short and the material sucked. Well come on you didn't expect them to be awesome in that amount of time. It was like six months after they first played together. Well anyway the kids loved it but the next door neighbor wasn't too impressed. He felt the need to call in Coventry's finest on this one. The cops showed up and broke up the party. Funny thing is, every time Wedgie plays a party in Coventry the cops feel the need to show up. They must send off a bad vibe. Could it be the fact that Graham has tattoos? The first real gig was at the Living Room in Providence, RI on January 28th, 1999 with the Nocturnals and Room 18. Wedgie rocked the house despite the freezing wintery conditions of the club. Guess Randy forgot to pay the heat bill. In 1998 sometime, nobody really knows the month, Wedgie recorded their first demo. Entitled "May Contain Nuts" after a personal add found in the Providence Phoenix Adult section, this record went on to sell some 80 copies or so. After the release of "May Contain Nuts," Wedgie started out touring the vast club scene of Providence, RI. In June of 1999, Wedgie entered the studio again. This was the real deal though. Not Dan's bedroom. Their first full-length release "Include Your Enemies" was released in February of 2000 and continues to be a favorite in cd players all over. Well maybe everyone's favorite drink coaster. September of 2001 saw the addition of a rhythm guitarist to the line up. Graham's long time friend Adam brought in guitar, vocals and a trumpet to the sound. In October of 2002 Adam decided the band wasn't for him and decided to move on and pursue other things. The hit song "Clarity" was recorded for the "Scene of the Crime" compilation while Adam was on board. Wedgie has played numerous gigs all over the New England region including opening for the Agents at Lupos, opening for Weston and the Blue Meanies at the Met Cafe, and opening for Side One Dummy recording artist Madcap. In 2002 Wedgie was nominated for "best punk act" in Providence by the Providence Phoenix. So this is the story of Wedgie up to 2003. Who knows what the future will hold for Milkman Dan, Leary, and The Cracker.
