With the whole Ray Lewis debacle going on right now, I got to thinking.  What is it about football that breeds such violence in these men?  There are so many sports, but the one that seems to carry the most violent reputation is football.  Every other day you hear about some new crime committed by a football player on ESPN.  My thought process led me to the second most violent sport: hockey.  How often do you hear about a hockey player committing a crime, much less shooting someone?  What is it exactly that separates the sports and keeps hockey players the serene examples of professional athletes and model citizens?  I think the cause is the rules of the sport.  In football, there is absolutely no fighting.  If you fight, it's a fifteen yard penalty and you are ejected from the game.  Plus the fight is broken up immediately.  Plus you will most likely be suspended for a few games.  All this does great damage to the team.  All that adds up to an extreme amount of frustration by the player involved.  He is thought of to have let his team down, and he wasn't even allowed to salvage his pride and at least do as much damage to the other guy as was eventually done to him.  In hockey, it is an entirely different story.  What happens when a fight breaks out?  They leave it go until someone is knocked to his knees.  This allows a great amount of damage to be done to the opposing player.  And all frustration to that point is relieved.  What is the punishment?  A five minute rest in the penalty box.  Crime punished.  That is it.  No suspension, only one-twelveth of an entire game is missed for potentially knocking an opponent out of an entire game.  What can we conclude from my thinking and comparison?  Hockey is the better sport.  Let the fuckers fight.  Save a life.
