Chapter 27

The next few days were spent getting Jessi's apartment cleared out.

"Where am I going to sleep tonight?" Jessi asked as she looked at her bare apartment.

"Mom said you could stay with us," Taylor said sadly.

"I don't want you to leave, Jessi!" Mackenzie said as he clung to her leg.

"I don't want to leave either," Jessi said.

"Jessi," Taylor said all of a sudden.

"Yes?"

"Since this is your last night together, I want to take you to the carnival. Our final date," Taylor said.

"OK," Jessi said.

That night Jessi and Taylor went to the carnival. They had hot dogs and shared cotton candy. They rode the bumper cars several times. They were fixing to ride the ferris wheel when they stopped in front of a booth.

"Bust all five balloons with five darts and win a stuffed animal of your choice," the man in charge of the booth called. "Five darts for a dollar, five darts for a dollar!"

"How do you like that big, pink teddy bear?" Taylor asked Jessi.

"I love it," Jessi exclaimed.

"Come on, I'm going to win it for you," Taylor said as he took Jessi's hand.

"No," Jessi said. "All they do is take your money."

"I'm good though," Taylor said and winked at Jessi. Three dollars later, Jessi owned the big, pink teddy bear.

"Thank you!" Jessi squealed as she hugged Taylor. "I love it!"

"You're more than welcome," Taylor said.

"Now I need to pick something for you," Jessi said as she looked at the booth. Her eyes passed over unicorns, teddy bears, smiley faces, and finally landed on a brown puppy dog that was holding a pink heart in his mouth. I Love You was written in white letters on the heart. Five dollars later, Jessi had won the dog for Taylor. "Think of me when you see this," Jessi said.

"Always," Taylor said. Jessi had to look away. She knew she was fixing to start crying. She bit her lip as she looked away.

Taylor saw what was happening and said, "Come on, lets go ride the ferris wheel before we leave." They rode the ferris wheel three times. One time they could see the whole carnival, because they were at the top when people were getting off and more people were getting on. They kissed under the bright moon while at the top of the ferris wheel.

"Let's go watch a movie," Jessi said as they were leaving. "I don't want this night to end."

"Neither do I," Taylor said softly.
