Chapter 6

"What's wrong with her?" Zac asked as he watched Jessi run away.

"I don't know, but something awful happened to her," Isaac said.

"And I plan to find out what," Taylor said.

Jessi ran and ran until she reached her aunt's house. She shakily unlocked the door, leaned against it, and tried to control her breathing. Why were the simplest things bringing back these memories? She slowly walked to her room, retreived her "Steve" journal from it's hiding place and began to write.

Dearl Journal, 8/11/99
Steve is still on my mind. I just can't block out these memories of him. I saw a little boy and girl fighting today and it reminded me of the last time I saw him. That night, weeks ago, that I broke up with him. He came to my house and busted the kitchen door. He came pounding up the stairs to my bedroom and began beating on my door.

Just then the telephone ring. It's probably my aunt pretending she cares about me Jessi thought.

"Hello."

"Hey, Jessi!"

"Christina, hey!" Jessi exclaimed. "How did you get this new number?"

"It's a long story," Christina said. "How are you doing?"

"So so," Jessi said. "I still have flashbacks of Steve."

"It'll get better, you just need to find another guy," Christina said gently.

"I know, but I'm scared of guys now. I'm afraid they'll hurt me, Christina."

"Not all guys are jerks, Jessi. Just give them a chance."

"I'll try," Jessi said.

"Good. OH! I almost died when I heard you moved to Tulsa!" Christina exclaimed. "Wouldn't it be great if you met Hanson?"

"I already have," Jessi said nonchalantly.

"You WHAT?!" her friend shrieked.

"In fact," Jessi said, "I have to babysit for them tonight."

"How did that happen?" Christina asked.

"It's a long story, but I need to get going," Jessi said.

"OK," Christina said, "but I expect a phone call from you tomorrow with all the details."

"But I have school tomorrow," Jessi laughed.

"Well, after school!"

"OK, nice talking to you, Christina."

"Same here."

"Bye."

"Bye."

Thirty minutes later, Jessi was ready to go. She jotted her aunt a quick note and left.

"What's this?" Diana asked as she held out a leather book.

"Oh, that's Jessi's journal," Taylor said. "She left it here while I was putting a bandage on her arm."

"Well, be sure to give it to her, dear."

"Yes, mom," Taylor said.

"You know, Taylor," Zac said, "all you would have to do is read her journal and you'd find out all of her problems."
