What does "G.S." stand for ?Last Updated in May 14, 1998
Have you ever heard anything about "G.S." ? "G.S." means Japanese mid-60's rock groups and is capital of "Group Sounds". Nothing's right from an English teacher's view (I'm glad not to be one of them). Most Japanese doesn't speak English very well, like me. "G.S."was named by the country's press those days. In Japan, the rock movement started in 1965 and the heat was surged in 1967-68. The characteristics of their sound was much like American Garage Punk. Because "G.S." was a name for the rock movement in 60's Japan, it stands for the groups of various musical styles. So the tendency was only a tendency, but somehow many of them had similar sound with American rock groups. Fuzz tone Guitar, organ, shouting, R&B-based heavy rhythm, wah-wah-guitar, etc. Noone knows why. If you don't understand Japanese, thank God that you don't ! The lyrics of GS' songs were childish and even hard to bear listening to for Japanese people today ! I think the reason why the record companies aren't eager to reissue GS' records is at this point. Though sounds were great, their lyrics and their giddy visual images prevent themselves from being apprized by garage rock fans. I have a few pages for introduction of GS. If you would like to know more, please visit the links. Note : If you are reading this page with the auditory device or the braille display, you shouldn't go to the bilingual page, for your devices can't process Japanese correctly.
