ASTRUD

Manolo and Genís have reached with only a disc, a strange status: they are equal adored and hated by local scene.

Their music and ideas don't let you indiferent. You will see it after reading this interview, the first ever one with dual answers!.

When I first read about you, I was really afraid of you. You seemed like the new Minema or Glamour. Band from Barcelona, with supposed cool band's name, collaborations with dance scene (vanguard, cosmos records) ...

ANSWER FOR YOU: When people listened the band the criticism finished, I suppose.

ANSWER FOR READERS: Coincidences, misunderstandings and bad intentions just went to other ones (another bands to critic, another labels to devise, another creativeness to show off, and so on).

When you were playing in Madrid for the first time, there was full of music critics and minor celebrities. Do Astrud believe in the hype?

ANSWER FOR YOU: Well, Yes but not for ourselves. ¿Music critics? Are you talking about Jorge, ¿aren't you?. Aldo also was there. And Elena. Maybe you didn't notice they were THE SUPPORT BAND. ¿Minor celebrities? Jesús Llorente is very popular lately.

ANSWER FOR READERS: We take part of some hypes: observation's comics, Douglas Coupland, gravity's law, TV in general. We prefer success than the hype. Where was Warner's A&R? Where were all the people couldn't get into the venue? Where were all the TV cameras, scented towels, jacuzzi, roadies, limousines...?

Some foreign fanznies drool over your record... even before it was released there, with poor distribution/promotion and singing in spanish. What's the reason for such a good treatment?

ANSWER FOR YOU: We only got 'Packaging Today', a magazine about packaging. Apart from that one, we don't read foreign magazines. Sorry.

ANSWER FOR READERS: And you answer this to me? Maybe Genís has friends in NY. Maybe Spain is in fashion. Maybe Astrud likes girlfriends' friends, to their summer pick-ups, to their overseas pen-friends and IRC's affairs.

Your debut cd ep record has been issued in the US (sealed fate) as a 10" and it will be issued in Japan (Bambini) with more songs than the original spanish version. What do you think about this interest from indie labels around the world?

ANSWER FOR YOU: Bambini will not issue our record ever. In fact we don't know which label will issue it, but it isn't Bambini.

ANSWER FOR READERS: We owed all to Claudia Gonson of the Magnetic Fields.

Why did you choose acuarela records?

ANSWER FOR YOU: There wasn’t any other offer. There was no alternative.

ANSWER FOR READERS: There wasn’t any other offer. There was no alternative.

Do you think an international recognition could made you more credible and sell more records?

ANSWER FOR YOU: If Sony will release it, surely.

RESPUESTA PARA EL FANZINE: If Deutsche Grammophon will release it, surely. We hope it (that Deutsche Grammophon release it and get more credibility).

What was the reason to choose sing in spanish? Is it was to prove that it’s possible to write great songs in spanish?

ANSWER FOR YOU: No. It is for convenience, and no trip ourselves up when we try to write the words of the songs. There's enough with metrics and the occasional rhyme.

ANSWER FOR READERS: Yes. Especially for a spanish speaker.

Your record sleeve features photos from Frank O. Gehry's Vitracenter building, well known in Spain because he is the creator of the Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum. Why did you choose it? Are you admirers of his work?

ANSWER FOR YOU: This is one of the building we like, we had some beautiful photos.

ANSWER FOR READERS: We like Vitra Center, we like Frank Gehry, we like architecture, we like Switzerland, we like Europe, America, the world. ¡Viva la gente!.

You were playing live in two spanish festivals this summer: Sónar (dance oriented) and FIB (indie-rock oriented). What was the worst of them for you? Do you like to play live?

ANSWER FOR YOU: Obviously this question has a trick in it. At the SONAR ciber-crowd looked perplexed at us at our guitar soundcheck. At Benicassim we felt weighed down by playing at four in the afternoon.

ANSWER FOR READERS: The best of Sónar is the worst of Benicassim. Dance stage, chill-out stage, expand your mind boring speech, hairstyle (limit your mind speech), and all that incredible accreditation system: for a day, for all places, etc.

You meet in a PULP gig... but would exist two bands were capable of separate you if they were playing at the same time and you only could choose only one?

ANSWER FOR YOU: We don't go to see bands playing live. We didn't see many of the bands at Benicassim because we didn't want to walk from the stand to the crowd.

ANSWER FOR READERS: At present, we will not to see any gig of any band. Neither Denim nor Status Quo nor Astrud.

Your latest fave records...

ANSWER FOR YOU: Denim's 'Summer Smash'. Pierre Bernac's recordings of Poulenc songs, with Poulenc playing the piano.
