Lawrie Hallett - Guests this evenings programme as usual Steve Sutherland from NME and also Marie Du Santiago from Kenickie. Good evening to you both. Marie
Marie Du Santiago - Hello
L - You're the real guest, so hello to you
M - Hello
L - Been doing your Christmas shopping?
M - Yes, I've been in the jungle of Oxford Street, both today and yesterday, it's an evil, horrible place with many elbows and claws. So don't go there.
L - Did you win?
M - Did I win? Of course I won. I was victorious. I was standing on a mound of dead Christmas shoppers within five minutes at the till queue and er changing room, for trying on clothes, of course.
L - Buying Christmas presents for yourself as well then.
M - Well more of a one for you, one for me sort of er system, which is a good enough system 'cos you get more stuff.
L - Sounds good enough to me.
L - We've got a selection of things to go through tonight, starting with this one from Freddie Fresh.
Drum Lesson by Freddie Fresh
L - Marie, what did you make of it?
M - Well personally it did my mind in. I think it was erm, it was just boring, nothing happened, which is a very essential ingredient in any record of any style, something must happen and it was just a bit rubbish, but to have a birth name of Freddie Fresh, then you know, respect to that.
Steve Sutherland - You think he was born Freddie Fresh?
M - Of course he was born Freddie Fresh, you don't acquire the name Freddie Fresh.
S - Mrs and Mr Fresh had a little baby Fresh
M - And they called him Freddie
S - Aahhh well
M - And he is very fresh I have it on good authority
S - Do you?
M - Personal hygine, tip top, flawless.
L - You learn things when you listen to this programme don't you?
S - You do, it's amazing, amazing.
S - I don't know, is this part of an album? Is it a single? If it is a single it's madness
M - It's an EP, it's the beginning of an EP
S - Right. Why would you do it?
M - An extended play. Maybe it makes more sense in the context of the extended play, as opposed to the shortened play. I say Freddie erm you know, your trying hard, obviously you have a lot of elements there and your trying to put them together in this pop stew, but I think maybe you should try a little harder and maybe think, look before you leap and er maybe sort out in your mind what your trying to do before you start pressing buttons in your home button pad, suite. 3 out of 10, must try harder.
L - Fair enough.
M - We were'nt keen
L - We'll go to a break and we'll come back with Glitterbox.
Scared Of all The World by Glitterbox.
L - Glitterbox, Scared Of All The World. Marie your turn to go first. What do you make of that?
M - Well, scared of all the world, quite a weedy sentiment to start with really isn't it. I mean I'm not saying anything but I don't think, I think you should put out a positive message for today's youngsters and scared of all the world, that's not doing. But sound wise, its a bit erm indie by numbers, but very Born To Run, a lot like Born To Run by The Boss, to much like Born To Run perhaps. Err it was alright, OK, which is probably the worst thing you could say about a record, so there you go.
L - Steve.
S - Yeah, we always end up saying things are just OK and then we end up saying thats the worst thing you could say about them, but it was just OK. I mean there was nothing particuly wrong with it.
M - The words were fairly rubbish to be fair.
S - Yeah, well, but
M - 'I have a friend who's paranoid'
S - That's a good way to start.
M - Oooh you think
S - It's not as good as 'finished with my woman cos she couldn't help me with my mind' of couse but when somebody's done that what else are you going to do. Err No I think all the elements were there, I think the singer made a fair fist of trying to sound a little bit strange, you know he had this little kind of quirky thing to his voice and they had a little Keith Moon drumming and as Marie pointed out they were doing Springsteins Born To Run most of the way through erm which we disagree, I don't think is a particularly good song to choose but you do
M - No I think it's a fine, if you're going to rip of a record I think you should go for a Born To Run, Wind Of Change. You know, a rock classic.
L - I think I might have to, I'm sorry to say I might have to agree with you on this one Steve, I mean the trouble with
M - Do you not like Born To Run?
L - Well yeah but it's been played so much
M - Come on
L - And so often that you kind of know it back to front and inside out and when someone else does something thats so close to it you just think, hang on a minute, it's just to close for comfort.
S - I just think its quite suprising that someone should choose as you put it The Boss to er
M - The Boss yeah
S - To rip off...he hasn't exactly been someone thats been mentioned as an influence or in interviews or anything for, for donkeys years
M - Well I'm here now to say that I'm influenced by The Boss. Yes both stylistically, musically, erm hair wise
L - Out of curiosity Marie, whats in your collection? What sort of things have you got in your record collection?
M - Er well mainly, it's Roxy Music, David Bowie and Aerosmith are my three main stays of what I like. You know, obviously. I listened to Big Ones three times yesterday, in a row, I was so excited erm
L - This was to calm you down, it was either to calm you down after the Christmas shopping or<br>M - It was, it was to put my Christmas shopping and the stress there of into perspective
S - So it was after the shop, not to work yourself up for it?
M - It was after. No no.
S - Oh OK, just getting rid of all the aggression
M - No. Nyyeahh.
S - Well maybe that's why they made this record, to get rid of all their aggression. Scared Of The World, is that what its called?
M - Scared Of All The World
L+S - Scared Of All The World
M - Not even most of the world, not even the bad elements of the world, every single bit.
S - It's not, it's not so bad.
L - No I mean someone had been paying attention to listening to their records hadn't they? When they put that together. I mean you didn't hear it cos once you open the microphones in here the speakers disappear but the ending was The Beatles, A Day In The Life, it was just the pianos
M - Oh.
S - Yeah the orchestral thing. Well everyone's doing that now aren't they?
M - Ooh not everybody, not people with sense. Good grief.
S - Well maybe not
