...a precious Max full page pic I keep

An article about SOULFLY on a magazine in which Max says lots of bullshit and lies about SEPULTURA, as, for instance, when he says Sepulguys used to throw away the letters fans sent them throught the Brazilian fanclub.

Embryonic SEPULTURA Fan Page

Over 10 years I have been listening to their noisy sounds and for all this time I have extremely admired their work. It's all genuine. Why? Because they refuse/resist doing things only for the money or success. They do what they want. They are what they are. Their percussion's always been different from any other trash band due to their Brazilian roots... after a Sepultura concert you feel like a truck ran over you.

At first, I wrote down a paragraph about how the band started, in a long time ago...

Brief Biography
Brief Biography

In the beginning, they were four kids from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil (Max, Igor, Paulo, Jairo). When they started playing, they were teenagers and they were still studying (Max once told he learned to speak english singing Motorhead songs). Vania Cavalera (Max and Igor's mother) perceived her sons ability for music, and she asked the other band members' parents to let the kids quit school (this I found out on a 90 magazine). This way Vania demonstrated how much faith she put on those kids. So, all of them were about 7th grade or so and stopped studying to do what their destiny was awaiting to happen: show the world their great talent.

They had a great musical improvement from Schizophrenia on... mainly due to a guy from the band Pestilence joining the band - Andreas. He's always been an excellent guitar player, and in a matter of fact, for me he's the best metal player on this Old Earth. Until Arise they played in a heavy fury, after that their style changed adding a heavy tribal rhythm, but in both styles their lyrics have always been aggressive and meaninful.

They already had many fans in their country, but it would be very hard to get somewhere with their kind of music, due to labels investing in other music genres that times. In fact, anywhere would be hard. Trash metal has never been priority in music for most people world wide. The more heavy the band is, the more difficult the situation becomes for it and of course it is for this reason a lot of good bands haven't had their opportunity yet. Max probably had a solution: he traveled alone to US to try something more for the band, and he succeeded.

As the band musically grows, their work becomes a great mixing of cultures. You may note that this started out on Arise, where their percussion was totally different in rhythm from the past albums. In Chaos A.D. was some Brazil Northeast percussion work. Roots came out with a lot of Brazilian Indian music.

It had been 14 years touring, composing, playing together and carryng on like brothers when the band finally split. Those were hard and sad days not only for fans but also for the band, but fortunatelly, they were strong enough to carry on. The saddest part is that Max avoids contact with his ex-band (except for his brother)...

Back to the studio, their first release without Max is Against. It came out with some Japanese percussion of KODOs and also with some logos from Japan culture.

The forthcoming album will be called Nation. Some other artists take part on it and one of them is Apocallyptica. I look forward to listening to the track they play, I just can't wait. If you have ever listened to Apocallyptica covering Refuse/Resist you know what I am talking about.

(on August 13th, 1998 - Thursday)

It was an MTV LIVE Video Music Award on Anhembi stadium, São Paulo, Brazil.

The last show of that night (which, of course, I videotaped!!) wouldn't be better. It was...

THE FIRST WORLD SHOW OF SEPULTURA AND THEIR GUESTS

Jason Newstead was there shouting "...roots bloody roots..."and it was beautiful. Sepultura was what all those people there were expecting to see and listen to, I saw how excited they were. That's why they did the last show of the night. They played "Choke", and it's heavy to death. Derrick also sang "Roots".

Barulho Contra Fome
Barulho Contra Fome

On a very special Saturday, 15th of August (1999), they played on Anhembi Stadium (São Paulo/Brazil) again with their guests (Mike Patton is one of them, Derrick, Jason Newstead, and about 40 Xavante Tribe Indians. This show was called BARULHO CONTRA FOME, what means "Noise Against Hunger" in Portuguese.

...happened in Rio and São Paulo and in both Sepultura opened the concert.
At least in Rio, it seemed Metallica was not able to catch attention from the public unless when they played such things like "One", "For whom the bell tolls", and such old stuff. Though people were tired after Sepultura, there were too much energy around and Metallica wasted it away for not playing their good stuff and sometimes they were even boring on stage.

As far as I see, Sepultura should be the headliner of that concert since they were far better, as always.

No Coração dos Deuses
No Coração dos Deuses

André Moraes, Igor and Andreas wrote the soundtrack for the Brazilian movie No Coração dos Deuses (transl.: "In the heart of the Gods"). As the movie has foccused a lot of the Brazilian history, I am not sure if it will be released outside Brazil. It played in Brazil in December, 1999.

This is one of the best soundtracks I have ever listened. The songs are played using many Brazilian instruments and the rhythm and melody are too much based on the Brazilian Indians songs. Mike Patton takes part on a fast and heavy song. Most ones are acoustically played in a very Kaiowas style.

Rock In Rio III
Rock In Rio III

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, January 19th, 2001... magical cellos played by Apocallyptica... started the opening, Valtio, the hymn for upcoming nation, the Sepulnation. Then Sepultura starts playing.

Do I have to say anything else? If you weren't there, just imagine...

They played songs for the new album NATION, which will be released on March (2001) and Saga haven't left my mind anymore... what a great song!

On this day were also 2 other Brazilian bands plus:
• Queens of the Stone Age
• Rob Halford
• Iron Maiden
