TEEN ZONE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW
http://www.teenzonemag.com/hansoninterview1.html

We had the chance to sit down with the 3 boys from Tulsa before their show in Phoenix, Arizona for a very special interview. A select number of Hanson's #1 fans were offered the opportunity to send in their questions for Hanson to answer. We received hundreds of e-mails, and with the short amount of time we had to spend with the boys, we only had time to ask a few questions (sorry!) BUT here is what we DID ask. We plan on conducting a Part 2 with Hanson, so keep posted!!

TZ : Are you guys planning on doing anymore shows in the states?
TAY: Not currently not for this album...
ZAC: We're really done with this.
TAY: We're really done with this tour, this is sort of just a one-off show which came at the very last minute. Right now, once we finish Latin America, taking a little bit of a break and then starting with the new music. I mean we're kind of ahead of ourselves, but we really wanna get the next record out much much sooner than the last two.
ZAC: That's just skeptical though, I mean for the musician. Ya know, make a record, just thinking about touring, then your thinking about the record.
TAY: And then continually it's happening so I don't think there's plans to do any more shows, for this album, after (tonight's).

TZ : What has been the best part of the tour so far?
TAY: Well, the tour's been really good I mean it's therapeutic, it's so easy to get wrapped up in all the other stuff you have to deal with. So, when you get to play cool shows and see devoted fans and play in these cool different venues.
ZAC: It's just the music.
TAY: You get to play the music, yeah.
ZAC: I mean, sometimes you get to play with Johnny Lang (that's Jonny to those in the know :D) in New York, John Popper in LA [and that's real cool].

TZ : Yeah, I remember John Popper, that was an awesome show.
TAY: Yeah, that was really really fun. Yeah, and those guys are so cool, and it's so cool to have a relationship with people you're fans of, that are into the music and can have to share it with you. So, I think the best part about the tour is just getting to play and just a really good experience.

TZ : When do you plan on getting back into the studio?
ZAC: It's probably going to be the beginning of next year, but right now we're thinking about what were going to do, finish demoing songs and stuff like that. But it's going to be the beginning of next year, and hopefully we'll get the next album out faster this time.
TAY: Yeah, we're actually already having music that didn't get put on this last record, but [we're] kinda beginning to get on top of that.

TZ : Are you planning to stay with the same label?
TAY: We are staying with the same label, yeah.
IKE: It's not that we actually have a choice necessarily.
TAY: Yeah, we're now still with Island Def Jam and we plan to stay with them until we do another record with Stephen Lironi, and do the last record with him, most likely. We're just really psyched to do that, we just want to musically kick down and take a little break and let our brains rest for a couple months.

TZ : Do you think you might pursue any other careers in the entertainment industry?
ZAC: It's possible. Movies and stuff like that's definitely been offered.
IKE: ..and talked about.
ZAC: I'm sure if there's something that you're really interested in you'll pursue that. But at the moment, I think music is the focus.
TAY: In the long-term, yeah, I know we'll pursue other things whether its writing for other people, writing with other artists, producing records for people, music for movies, maybe even acting. But it's all separate, I think what's weird about it is if it's exciting, it makes sense that you'll success it as it comes. But until then, focus obviously [is on the music].

TZ : Here's a good one, Have you guys ever gone skinny dipping?
IKE: Have we ever...?(bursts out laughing)
TAY: (sits back with hands up *smiles*) I decline from answering that.
ZAC: (raises hands in the air) you know what? I PLEAD THE FIFTH!!!
IKE: (still laughing) I plead the fifth.

TZ : Other than playing shows, what do you do for fun on the road?
TAY: We have friends come up to a show. You've just got to find ways to enjoy everything around you.
ZAC: You end up watching a lot of movies actually. That's an easy thing to do on a day off, it's like "OK...there's a movie theater down the road."
TAY: You find a good restaurant, go get some coffee or see if you get some friends to come up to that city and hang out. Then a lot of times you'll be in a little town or some place where you have no idea what's going on so yeah, you'll end up going to a movie.
IKE: Or you'll hang out with your crew.
TAY: See, a lot of the guys are our friends and so we just find things to do. We make each day kind of fun. A lot of times we have days off, like yesterday. Where EVERYBODY was just resting. Because we had two shows back to back, then onto Mexico, then two shows back to back, we only had one day in between four shows back to back.
IKE: Or we watched O.U...
ZAC: kick Nebraska's butt!!!

TZ : Do you work out on a regular basis?
ZAC: Well, I would say our job is a workout!
IKE: Yeah (laughs).
TAY: Me too. If we weren't doing what we are doing, we would be doing more outdoor [activities]. But, since we're on the road so much the only REAL workout we get is being on stage jumping around. That's probably it.
ZAC: I would say at least for your upper body, drums is ENOUGH of a workout for me (plays air drums with sound effects)
TAY: If we weren't doing this we would be doing more athletic things, because you have more time to just do it. We don't do enough but we get plenty of a workout during a show.

TZ : Does hanging out with an older crowd on the road all the time, and in the business make you feel awkward towards people more your own age?
TAY: No, not at all. I think you probably have a broader perspective then a lot of kids, a lot of people your age. I think a lot of people that are in my perspective they're seniors in high school, and they are completely just in a totally different place. I think we have a much bigger perspective of the world, because we work with people who've seen the world. We've spent so more much time on not focusing on just being people that are people who are supposed to be our age.
IKE: I think part of it has to do also with the fact that we were homeschooled. Being homeschooled and spending a lot more time with our parents and with older people. I think that creates a certain amount of ability to communicate with other people outside of your own world that's a little bit of a broader perspective is in the first place.
ZAC: Well, I think what it is, is you don't really focus on age.
IKE: Yeah.
ZAC: In my opinion, I don't really give a flip that Ike's five years older than me, or not. Or whether, how much older you are than me.
ZAC: It's really not about that. You have a much broader perspective, you don't focus on the age difference.
IKE: Yeah, exactly.
TAY: Yeah, I think you just have a broader perspective on things.

TZ : Have you ever thought about putting out an album of just cover songs?
TAY: Yeah, we have thought about it. I don't think there would be much of a response to that, but we've definitely thought about things like that. It would be fun just to record songs that you like and put it on a record.
ZAC: When we do covers it's more for our enjoyment. You know, whether we do an AMAZING job of it, or just a good job of it, or maybe it's a BAD job of a song, we're enjoying it, and that's who it's for. Plus for the audience, even if it's just more songs that we love.
TAY: That's the part of the show that's just OURS. It's sort of a little self-indulgent, sometimes. We just have a good time but I think it does work for people who have heard the songs or people that remember the songs, or may have heard them. You know, for the parents who come to the shows, or they could be older fans, then they can connect with that so it's cool.

TZ: Are you planning on doing I want you to want me tonight?
IKE: (Laughs)
ZAC: Um, it's possible. *smiles*

TZ : The fans would really like you to do that song (laughs).
ZAC: The funny thing about that song, I mean it's just a simple song, the really famous recording is...
IKE: Live at Budokan.
ZAC: Yeah, right. You listen to it, and it doesn't matter what your singing, cause he's not singing half the lyrics (starts mumbling and snapping fingers everyone starts to laugh zac starts singing I want you to want me as he mumbles again) Ya know?
IKE: Yeah, that's a good song it's a fun song to play definitely, we played it a lot more the last half of the tour, cause we kind of left it out [in the beginning of the tour].
ZAC: Yeah, we stuck it in a little bit more.
IKE: Yeah, we started playing it more over the last of the tour.
ZAC: Well, I think we started getting more requests for it.

"Hey Hanson, your new CD is great, my question is what is Runaway Run about?" (Maria 15, CA)
TAY: Runaway Run is a really really sad song first of all. It's a song about somebody that is so in love with somebody, and they've gone through this whole thing in their head, and they're realizing that this other person is never going to return that feeling. And, they're saying I've gotta move on with my life, 'cause I'm gonna lose it, I'm gonna go crazy, 'cause they're never going to return it. And, I've just gotta get away from it, even though I'll maybe never feel the same way again.
IKE: He's telling himself the things he loves about her so much, and all the things he thinks are so amazing about her and then he says...
TAY: I'll always be there for you, but I know I've got to get away from you.
IKE: "..and I waited for you, hoping that you'd come back to me, and I waited for you" ya know "run run runaway run". He's telling himself "I've gotta just get away from this, I've gotta move on with my life because..."
TAY: "..it's never going to work out."

"What do you think of the fans as labeling you as innocent?" ( Katie Maximick, Vancouver, Canada)
IKE: As being innocent?
TZ : Like, none of you party basically, you behave all the time. Do you do normal teenage stuff?
IKE: Well....
TZ : They see you as "innocent," but want to know are you really little devils?
TAY: Well, we may be little devils, but whether or not we're innocent...
ZAC: We're not. NO, we're not little devils, but I think because...
IKE: ..by no means are we little devils.
ZAC: Because, we don't um, smoke CRACK, ya know we don't..
IKE: go out and get DRUNK out of our minds.
TZ : And pick up any hooker on the corner (laughs)
TAY: Exactly.
IKE: Yeah, exactly.
TAY: We're normal guys, with inner brains.
IKE: ..we defiantly do some stupid stuff.
TAY: We do dumb stuff, stupid teenager stuff. All of that, but we're not necessarily, we're not dumb.
IKE: Were not destructive to other people's property or to ourselves.
ZAC: But it also has to do with the fact that, I mean, we also have a job. I'm 15 so I think a lot more about stuff, like I've got to do this tomorrow or I can't break my leg jumping off a bridge, 'cause I've gotta play drums in, ya know, four weeks.
TAY: I think we just, we defiantly do plenty of dumb teenager stuff but whether we are angels or not is for everyone else to debate (laughs).
IKE: Yeah we're defiantly not.

"I was just wondering if you guys have any dreams that haven't come true yet?" (Britney, 17, CA)
IKE: (Laughs)
TAY: There's SO many things we haven't done.
IKE: Yeah.
TAY: I mean there's just, we're not really beginning. There's so many things we want to do, people we want to meet, people we want to work with, places you want to go..
IKE: I think there's an aspect of which is just that, this is a dream for us, and its a dream come true. But I think there's just a lot of other things we do want to pursue. I would say that it's like you're never satisfied with yourself in a sense. It's like you're always wanting to be better at your respected instruments, song writing or other things, like art or writing.
TAY: You just really want something that really says something that really effects people in the long term, and it actually means something. And they'll look back on it and go "Hanson did something that touched somebody or changed somebody or was actually influential" as opposed to just some random song that got played on the radio. It's not about that for us, it's much bigger than that.

"MOE means everything to your fans, especially the ones that can't get Hanson.net for whatever reason, why are you ending it, And is there anyway to save it?" ( Dina Graziano, 15, CT)
ZAC: Did you get these [questions] off the Internet?
TZ : Yeah.
ZAC: It's funny that you find more people asking on the Internet WHY you're getting on the Internet.
TAY: The thing is, on our end they don't realize how hard it is to distribute a magazine and just small things occur.
ALL: PEOPLE MOVE!
IKE: ..and they never tell you!
TAY: They expect you to send them your magazine, without telling you the [new] address, and you've got to guess where to send it. It's just so much harder to maintain it. We love doing it but to put it on the Internet, it won't be the same thing on the Internet, but we will do stuff like MOE. I think that the fans have to understand we love the fact they're gotten into it, and we really appreciate how much they've embraced it. We love doing MOE, its really really cool. But we've come to a point where we realized we need to be able to reach more people than we have with them at the fan club. There's SO many people outside of the country that can't get it. So, you have the people in Australia, the people in Latin America, the people in Europe that can't get the magazine. We were trying to figure out a way where everybody would be able to reach this fan club and have it be international and get people more interacted. You almost cannot do a magazine like that internationally, its impossible to ship it and make it work so what we're going to try to do is maintain some kind of actual magazine which we put out periodically as an item that anybody can get a hold of on the Internet. As you would buy it, like a [piece of] merchandise, like you buy a T-shirt. It's $15.00 for this whatever paged magazine for whoever wants to get it, and it will be something still special. Then, anybody that's on Hanson.net will be getting more than anybody else. Its a change, but I think, who knows? Maybe we'll start the magazine up by the year again.

TZ : What is the weirdest fan experience you've had?
TAY: Well, there are times when, rarely does it really happen. I mean, you have the crying, you have the people that do weird things or sneak into places, come to your hotel, try to get into your bus, but the times where you meet somebody and they REALLY do freak out, they can't leave and then they have to be dragged away by people.
IKE: I think that happened a few times.
ZAC: I think the funniest thing is when.. I mean for anyone out there, don't walk up and say "IM not a psycho freak" ya know, "IM NOT A PSYCHO FAN!" This girl walks up and she's like "hi, hi Tay, hi Taylor I'm not a psycho fan, I'm not a psycho fan" "..Hi Zac, hi Zac GAWWWD!!" (SPAZZES OUT)
TAY: By the time she got to Zac she REALLY, there was one particular girl who REALLY REALLY, she just like lost it. And, we were like "WOW" That's just so crazy, we had guys at the signing help take her out because she..
IKE: She was kind of just physically going nuts (Zac doing sound effects)
TAY: That hardly ever happens though. Most fans are really, really cool. There's just a few situations where somebody is a little bit more whacky excited than they should be.

TZ : You can walk out of your hotel, and all of a sudden you see one fan fall this way one fall that way one fall back, and the rest rush you
ALL: (laughs) YEAH
TAY: It happens, but the fans are extremely cool.

If you were a guardian angel which one person would you be watching over, and why? (Kirstie Marie)
IKE: (LAUGHS)
TAY: If you were a guardian angel? Well, if I were a guardian angel, I would have been John Lennon's, and I would have not let him get shot.
IKE: Exactly, umm...
TAY: ..if there was a way to not let that happen
ZAC: Well, I know who in thinking of I just wont tell you.. no, um..who? lets think of someone...
IKE: Well, I think that if you had, you know, of course if you were like married to someone or if that kind of thing, then that'd be the person you'd constantly want to be watching over.
ZAC: Yeah.
IKE: If you were relating to somebody that would not be someone like that.. WOW.. Maybe like Buddy Holly, Richie Valenz, and The Big Bopper. I would be like ya know going "Guys don't get on the plannnne don't get on the plane" (laughs)
IKE: It would be interesting to see how the world would be different with Buddy Holly, Richie Valenz, and The Big Bopper [if they] had lived through and not had gone on the plane.
ZAC: They'd make a song about planes.

TZ: Thanks guys so much for taking the time out for us. Our readers have been beating us up to get these questions answered. It was a lot of fun! Again thanks!
