Suede's Brett Anderson
Today is also the birthday of Brett Anderson. London Suede (originally just plain Suede until they were sued by some American jazz singer of the same name) materialized (get it?) on the scene in 1993, causing the American press to start squawking about a second British invasion. Led by Anderson, Suede had the cute-band looks, retro-hip clothes and glam-rock/alternative sound the American public was apparently craving; much of their negative publicity had to do with them being too popular or too good-looking. However, once the cork popped with their debut Suede , the fizz of their success quickly went flat. To make matters worse for Anderson, his girlfriend and bandmate Justine Frischmann broke up with him to form her own band, Elastica.
