CHAPTER THREE

It was a cold, rainy day, and Shannon sat on her windowsill silently. She loved the rain… she always had. People so often associated it with gloom and misery, but not her. Rain is a matter of attitude.

Laughter wandered up through her open window, and she glanced down. Taylor was visiting…for like the tenth day in a row…and he and Rachael were out ‘singing in the rain’. They frustrated Shannon. She couldn’t understand how someone nice like Taylor could be so happy with someone like Rachael. It was just so wrong. Shannon closed her eyes and listened to the rain on the roof, trying not to think about them. The phone began to ring.
"Hello?" Shannon questioned as she snatched up the phone.

"Um, hi! This is Zac Hanson."

Shannon raised her eyebrows.

"Oh..um…hi. I’ll just get Taylor for you."

"No wait! Who are you?"

"Shannon."

"Are you Rachael’s twin?"

"Um…yeah."

"Oh wow that is so cool! Does that mean that you’ve like got a clone of yourself?"

Shannon relaxed a little at the boy’s enthusiastic tone, and allowed a smile to play at her lips.

"No, we’re not identical." She answered.

"Oh…ok. Well…I guess that’s kind of good. It’d be so freaky seeing yourself walking around…"

"Um…yeah." Shannon said, smiling, yet a little sceptical.

"Still…how cooool would it be!? You could think up the most awesome pranks to play on people!"

"Yeah, you could!" Shannon grinned.

"But anyway, you sound pretty cool. You’re probably like the cool twin and Rachael is like…a retard. Imagine having to be her clone."

Shannon laughed. Zac smiled on the other end of the line. He loved making friends.

"Nah, I'm just kidding." He laughed. "So where is the happy couple? I’d keep an eye on them if I were you. Tay, like, bashes people up."

After a moment of silence, Zac giggled.

"I’m kidding!! Tay couldn’t…oh…I’m like so much stronger. I’m the drummer, you know, it’s my job to bash stuff!"

Shannon laughed and shook her head.

"So…" Zac drawled, curious, "do you do….stuff?"

"Like what?"

"Eat, sleep…"

"Um…yeah." Shannon giggled.

"Do you like music?"

"Yeah, I love music."

"Yeah, I thought so. Tay told me he heard you playing piano the other day."

Shannon cringed. He did?

"Do you guys tell each other a lot?"

"Pretty much." Zac laughed, "What about you two?"

Shannon paused.

"Um…we aren’t really that close…at all."

"Why?"

Shannon smiled at Zac’s blatancy.

"We’re um…we’re very different people."

"Oh."

The intention of his phonecall forgotten, Zac continued to talk. Shannon became more and more at ease talking to the confident, good-natured boy, and Zac became more and more fascinated by her. The more he found out, the more mysterious she became, and the more inquisitive he felt. An hour passed before the Hanson household started questioning Taylor’s presence, or lack of it, and Zac remembered his message.

After Shannon passed on the phone, she retreated to her room and climbed out to her tree, which was drenched by the recent rain. The memory of their conversation was bright in her mind.

"Zac." She whispered, a smile creeping over her lips. "Zac Hanson."

She laughed and shook her head. She could not remember the last time she felt so happy.
