CHAPTER SEVEN

Exactly a week after that hectic night, Shannon received a phonecall.

"Hey, can I speak to Rachael." A deep male voice requested.

"Yeah, I’ll just get her." She sighed, and dropped the phone. She crept to her sister’s room, and opened the door a crack. She was flat out on her bed, fast asleep. There were dark rings under her eyes, and she was obviously still recovering from her night out the previous night. Shannon closed the door again, and jogged back to the phone.

"She’s asleep, sorry."

"Well, can’t you wake her up?"

"Um…no."

"Look, I need to talk to her. Could you just wake her up?" The voice was becoming spiteful. Shannon racked her brain…something about him was familiar. His voice triggered emotions of hazy, suppressed memories. She battled for clarity.

"I don’t think that…"

"Listen….Shannon…I don’t care about what you think, ok? I have a right to speak to my own girlfriend!!"

Shannon froze.

"What did you say?" She whispered.

"Go and get my girlfriend? Get Rachael."

Girlfriend?

Shannon was frozen in shock. After a moment, the voice sighed furiously.

"Stubborn bitch." He muttered.

Shannon could hard believe what she was beginning to understand. She swallowed hard, her pulse pounding feverishly in her head.

"Shane?" She whispered.

"What?" The voice answered indignantly.

"It’s…you? You’re going out with Rachael?" She whispered.

"Do you have a problem with that?"

She slammed down the receiver, shaking.

Rachael was cheating on Taylor Hanson….with her old boyfriend.

Shocked and frightened tears welled in her eyes. Tears of anger. Rachael knew. She knew what had happened between her and Shane. She was the only one who knew the secreted truth. And now she’d done this. Shannon ran to her room, slammed the door, and crouched in the corner of her bed. Her own sister had betrayed her. Her twin. A tear ran down her cheek as she sat hugging her legs with her chin on her knees. Emotions which she had tried so hard to forget came smashing back, abusing her fragile personality. She recalled haunting memories and nauseating wounds that she had tried so hard to forget.

Because Shane hadn’t been an average boyfriend.

Theirs hadn’t been a normal relationship.

He had a problem.

A problem with controlling anger.

Just one week into her daunting relationship with him, he had abused her.

Those days with Shane had been the worst times of her life

He hurt more deeply than anyone else ever had…

…and Rachael didn’t even seem to care.

Rachael entered Shannon’s room without knocking, and began pacing around in circles. Shannon was curious, but ignored her sister coldly. Rachael was extremely uneasy around her twin ever since she had found out about her relationship with Shane, six days ago. They weren’t on speaking terms…but Rachael had something to say, and she had to say it…

"Taylor found out." Rachael blurted out suddenly, a hint of guilt creeping into her voice.

Shannon just glanced up at her sister with scorn, hiding her true emotions. Taylor knew. His heart had been broken. Shannon bit the inside of her cheek, sympathising deeply for the boy who’d charmed her from the start, despite his recent obnoxiousness…

"Well, it was only a matter of time." Shannon said flatly, thinking ahead to her inevitable phone call to Zac. It was going to be a long night…

Rachael shook her head.

"No, you don’t understand…he’s kind of still here."

Shannon’s sneer fell.

"What, Taylor? Here? In the house?"

"Yes, he’s outside, but I’ve got to go out to meet someone now."

"Rachael!! I’m not here to fix you problems…"

"No, I’m not asking you to. Just…I don’t know, keep him remotely interested in life until Isaac can come and collect him ok? Thanks."

Before Shannon could say anything else, Rachael had run out the door, and slammed it behind her. Shannon stood frozen in her room. It took her a good ten minutes to convince herself to walk out of her room, down the stairs, and outside to where he was sitting by the pool.
