Tiger Beat got a chance to chat with Ike, Taylor and Zac Hanson as they traveled the country promoting their new live CD and Video, The Road To Albertane. Pull up a chair and listen in!
TIGER BEAT: From the sights and sounds on The Road to Albertane it seems like you had a great time on tour. What were some of the problems you encountered?
Taylor: You go out on stage and sometimes the mic doesn’t work. Sometimes you go, ‘Gosh, what was that chord?’ or something like that. Or the guitar isn’t turned on. Most of the tour has been really great. It was extended three times longer than it was planned to be and everything has gone great.
TB: This tour was the first time that many of your fans have seen Hanson live. What have fans done to try and meet you?
Taylor: People chase you. People get on your hotel floor. They try to find me. Even though there are crazy things that happen it’s just about the fans. It’s about the fact that they are coming to the shows and buy your records. That’s the only reason that you get successful.
TB: So you don’t mind the crazy stuff that happens?
Taylor: There are definitely crazy things that happen, but when it’s not happening you wish it was, so I don’t think you can down it.
Isaac: It’s actually very cool, because we get to meet our fans before the shows a lot of times. We get to meet a lot from our fan clubs that come to shows. It’s a really cool way to keep in touch with your fans-which is what we like to do.
TB: What music do you listen to to make you feel go?
Isaac: I don’t know. There’s a lot of music out there and I listen to a lot of different things.
Zac: I don’t think any certain person can lift your spirits or anything.
Taylor: I [prefer] writing music. When you are working on songs, I think that is definitely a way to lift yourself up. Especially when you write about whatever you’re feeling or thinking. You’re like a poet, only putting it to music. Whatever you are thinking can be a song.
TB: What are your plans for 1999?
Taylor: Well…we’ll begin working on the next record and that will come out soon.
TB: Are there plans for solo albums? Isaac: I don’t think there is any reason for us to split up. I don’t know why we would. The beauty of the group is the fact that it is a group. We still are all together so I don’t think there is any reason for us to do anything else except for being who we are.
TB: You work together and live together. What’s the secret of three brothers who get along so well?
Zac: There is no secret to getting along.
Isaac: Of course we fight…everybody does.
Taylor: We know each other very well, obviously, and we work together well. We have the same interests.
Zac: Just don’t aim for the face.
Isaac: Yeah, no fists to the face.
Taylor: Just hit below-right!
TB: Do you guys want to go into acting?
Zac: Everyone wants to be what they’re not.
Isaac: It’s one of those, ‘the grass is always greener on the other side…’ We’re musicians and that’s what we do. I think we are going to stick with that. If the right opportunity shows itself, we might consider it, but right now music is what we do.
TB: To so many people Hanson have the perfect, clean image. Do you ever get the urge to just go crazy and do something outrageous?
Taylor: I think it is definitely interesting how different people get portrayed in different ways. We don’t think of ourselves as trying to have this image or that. It’s who we are.
Isaac: Plus, we do a lot of outrageous things, so you never know. Whether you see it or not you’ve got to enjoy doing whatever.
TB: Can you give an example of something weird?
Taylor: You live life and survive. That’s the wildest thing.
Zac: I love dirt bikes!
TB: Have you met any performers you admire?
Taylor: It’s hard to say, you meet a lot of cool musicians.
Isaac: We’ve met a lot-Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Slash, Fastball.
Taylor: We’ve met a lot of musicians and I think it is always cool.
TB: Who would you still like to meet?
Taylor: There are still a ton of people. I think that the most influential music for us is 50’s and 60’s rock and roll. People like Otis Redding, who, of course, is not around anymore. People like that who were influential for us. Zac: Let’s put it this way, some of the people we would like to meet are deceased so…
Isaac: We’ll see…
TB: Thanks, guys.
