I just wanted to say my husband and I love the work you did with Yanni. My father was a fantastic drummer and because of that I grew up in night clubs and country clubs listening and dancing to my fathers music. He never became famous in a wor dly way because as you know, to be whole soled at something often compromises your private life. He chose a private life but he instilled the love for good music in me that I will always appreciate. You are the most magnificent drummer of our time. He said that he would like to get his hands on 'Hologram Sky' again and was wondering where the master tapes might be. Any clue Charlie? You know Charlie, I'll never forget the first time I saw you perform. It was at the New Prague Park Ballroom with Chameleon many years ago. Wow, did you guys rock! Your drum solo blew me away. But I have to confess that I can't figure out the name of the song by looking at the box for the video. I was surprised to hear that you played with Stan Kenton. Up until my father died last October Kenton was his favortie musician. I kind of rubbed off on me because I like the song Peanut Vendor and others. A very close and dear friend of my dad's ho was like an uncle was a drummer and also taught. The two of them went to see Kenton around Chicago somewhere. Some how my uncle talked to somone and he was able to sit in for a couple songs. My wife and I had the opportunity to see Yanni at the World Music Center in Tinley Park, Illinois a few years ago. I believe you were still with him at that time. Could you please answer two questions for me please. 1) What was the name of the drum olo at the Acropolis? 2) Are your from the Chicago Area?. He would borrow my cassettes and drum away on his little kids drum set all afternoon. We took him to see Yanni in Charlotte this year and he was disappointed that Charlie wasn't with him. Comments: I am a fan of Charlie's. I havent yet heard your new CD "Plain James". I going to get it though. I like you style of playing the drums. What inspired me was when my father bought Yanni Live at the Acropolis. Myself I have played since I was 7. hat is ho ever, when I got my first drumset. My dad played when he was in High School. He taught how to play a few beats and from there I went for myself. I played throughout middle school in concert band and that is where I learned to read music. I also played my enior year of high school in jazz band. I thought that was neat. I have some music of Buddy Rich and have bought some of his books. I never new Charlie had some few bands outside of playing wiht Yanni. I am now 18 and have a big future in front of me to i prove on what there is to know and to be played. I also don't look at playing the drums to be playing but, I look at them as something that is apart of me. |

Comments: Charlie - do you remember playing the Lakeside Ballroom in Glenwood, MN? This would have been during your Cameleon days, of course. You were quite an inspiration to me. I grew up in Glenwood and would see Cameleon whenever you came to town. I must say I h ve fond memories of that time period. My dad always reminded me how fun it was back in the '40s when the big bands would come to town. Now I feel bad for the kids growing up today. You just don't see bands touring ballrooms anymore(at least in MN). The ba lrooms have either closed down or are being rented for receptions. At least the Twin Cities is still hopping! I have Cameleon's first album - but nothing to play it with! One of these days I'll get a stylus for my turntable so I can play all my old albums .. I purchased the "Yanni Live at the Acropolis" video and have almost worn the thing out. I really enjoyed the footage they gave the band. Yanni's music is best, I believe, when played with a full concert orchestra, don't you think? I have a ba kground i classical, marching,jazz,and rock music, so I really enjoy Yanni's style. Your playing was first-rate. As far as favorite drummers, here's a short list: Vinnie Coliuta, Chick Webb,Buddy Rich,Bernard Purdie,Steve Smith,Gene Krupa, Neil Peart,David Garibaldi,El Negro,Manu Katche',Tom Andrews,and of course,yourself!
