Magnetic Fields

The region around a magnet which a magnetic force is exerted, is called a magnetic field. To trace out the magnetic field of a magnet, place a sheet of paper over a bar magnet and sprinkle iron filings on the paper. The filings will reveal the magnetic field of the magnet.

The shape of the magnetic field is called the Magnetic field lines (or field lines, flux lies, or lines of force). These lines go out from the north pole of a magnet, loop around, and return to the south pole of the magnet.
The lines lie closest to each other near the poles where the magnetic field is strongest.

If you put a compass next to a strong bar magnet, it will cause the compass needle to align with the bars magnetic field lines. just as it would to earths magnetic field lines.

The strength of a magnetic field is measured in units called gauss or tesla. A magnetic field is the force which creates other permanent magnets, by aligning their domains.

How Magnetic fields work

The electric field is very similar to the magnetic field. This is because of the distortions in the electric field caused by motion.

A magnetic field is produced by the motion of electric charge. The atoms whos electrons in a bar magnet are in constant motion about atomic nuclei. This moving charge creates a tiny current an produces a magneti field, so every spinning electron is a tiny magnet. two electrons spinning in the same direction creates a stronger magnetic field, If a pair of electrons are spinning in opposite directions then they cancel eachother out, and their is no magnetic field, this occors in substances such as plastic, wood etc.. .
