shards of hair and strands of glass
dripping from my floor
while I move still across my fingers
my pockets empty because I put everything in them
time is in the air
and the silence fills my head with sounds
the books on t.v. are making my life
as I fall from my body and into another world
and here I will walk among the vibrations
for this is where I feel myself thinking
and to expand I must lose my space
I must become enclosed to become open
I must lose myself to find myself
and when I reach the glowing bulb
I will be trapped from freedom
and free from being trapped
PUBLICATION: Vortex, mid-June 1995, East High School.
HISTORY: I wrote this one towards the end of the day, in the computer room of East High School. After printing it out, I took it home and eventually misplaced it for about five or six months. When I rediscovered it, I thought it ironic that its title was "lost and found," which the poem had certainly become.
The poem itself began as a cross between the Beatles' "Across the Universe" and Nirvana's "Something in the Way." Notice that the only capital letters in there are in the word "I." This is also the only time so far that I have not ended a poem with some sort of ending punctuation.
