Birds of a feather and whatever. In this full venue, former Lush singer Miki Berenyi and former Lush bassist Phil King have come to see their erstwhile singing guitarist Emma Anderson play in her new group, Sing-Sing.
A nice family vibe, you might think, until you realise that Sing-Sing are signed to the Cocteau Twins' Bella Union label. Yes, kids, be very afraid. Everybody who was signed to 4AD records in 1993 is gathering together in one last attempt to reduce the beauty of pop to a lot of ethereal Enya-esque bleating. Aaaaargh!
Or maybe not, because surprisingly Sing-Sing is a sonic-cathedral free zone. Having relegated Anderson to guitar playing and the odd bit of harmonising, singer Lisa O'Neill gives us an indication of how good Lush's last album, 'Lovelife', might have been. A logical progression from the final traumatic days in Lush city, Sing-Sing are all choppy guitars and rattling drums with barely an effects pedal in sight. And 'Feels Like Summer' is a corking tune which doesn't mention the Good Mixer once; two years ago that would be unheard of.
Sing-Sing hosanna, then.
Jim Wirth.
