Lush News

  • 18/3/98-For those of you who want to know what Phil is up to as touring bassist for the Jesus and Mary Chain, here are some new tour dates for them:

    March:

18th: London King's Cross Water Rats.

    April:

    22nd: Dumfries Loft.
    23rd: Glasgow Garage.
    24th: Liverpool Lomax.
    26th: Sheffield Boardwalk.
    27th: London Camden Electric Ballroom.
    28th: Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms.

Support comes from The Kings Of Infinite Space.

For people who get excited about these things, (like me) Emma Anderson has been credited for the first time as being in Sing-Sing in this week's public NME. For those of you who are interested the NME is now a full colour magazine for the first time! Ever! I really do mean it! Go and see for yourselves! Now!

Finally, Lush's split has been announced on the 4ad webpages. Sobs.

  • 1/3/98-According to MTV news, Emma is now in the studio with Sing-Sing, who consist of Emma (of course) Joely Tonna and Lisa O'Neill. Who the hell are they, I don't know! Information anyone?

  • 24/2/98-Oh dear.Lush Split Official. Lush have announced their split officially. As has been said on this news page(though most of the news on here has benn taken from various sources, I might add) Emma has formed Sing Sing (it might be hyphonated, who knows?)and is currently demoing songs to secure a record deal. Miki has also started to work on her own solo material. As for Phil, he is not playing on any Jesus and Mary Chain releases, just playing bass for them on their upcoming tour. According to 4ad the split is completely amicable - and has been anticipated for a long time.

  • 19/2/98-I found this roaming the web just now-Emma has formed Sing Sing with two female guitarists/singers. I found this at the liggers' page! You really should go and see for yourselves.

  • 28/1/98-Emma's new band now have a name! They are called Sing Sing and a single release is expected relatively soon. (Thanks ABX!) I suppose I should now rename the page to include the new band, but it just doesn't have the same ring to it, does it.

  • 26/1/98-According to the latest public nme, Lush have split up. (But who believes a music rag's gossip column, eh?) Even though it's been reported for months.....

  • 4/1/98-Just to tidy the baby rumour up, Miki is apparently not a mum but just a god mum, and so is Emma apparently. Also, Emma was spotted backsatage somewhere telling everyone she had a big surprise for the beginning of 1998, though it was in Public NME, and she was probably drunk...

  • 20/12/97-This is getting really confusing now. From the latest nme: Phil King has definitely left to join the Jesus and Mary Chain, but Lush are still a duo. (i.e. Miki and Emma.) Emma has a new band that she won't sing in, but there are 2 singers, one of which is the guitarist. (I would think the band would be on 4ad.) Also, Miki isn't soing anything right now and Lush haven't split up because (from alt.music.4ad): Miki is on maternity leave! Unknown to everyone else, last month Miki had a baby girl called Sara. Apparently the father drums for the LA's, if they still exist, that is. Congratulations Miki!

  • 13/12/97- Lush have definietly split up. There will be no official announcement from 4ad, but they have contacted them and told them that it's over. Phil King has joined the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Emma is starting work on a solo project. Miki is just laying low for a while. There will probably be more news after Christmas.

  • 28/11/97- Sorry I haven't updated the page in a long time, but my connection's been down. It appears there's been rumours of a new lush single called 'second coming', but this is just a dance band called either lush(copyright infringement!) or lash, no one's really sure. (Those with a weak heart should not read on.) This was posted to Starlust by Phil, apparently from a reliable source. Lush have split up. Expect to see more from certain members in the future. If this is true, i'd just like to say, 'bugger.'

  • 22/10/97- I read this just now, from someone's letter on teletext. Miki was spotted at a Veruca Salt gig and said that Lush were still together but taking a break. Nothing knew there really then!

  • 20/10/97-Thanks to Josh Southern, who e-mailed me with this: Emma Anderson is definitely not touring with Tanya Donnelly in the USA, and, to the best of my knowledge, has not toured with her in the UK.

  • 28/8/97-A bit of a rare occurence these days, we seem to have some Lush news! The new drummer rumour, was, I fear, just a false rumour, but, someone at 4ad says they are still having meetings together to decide what they want to do. (Thanks to whoever posted this to Starlust.) Also, another message posted there from someone who bumped into Miki says that Lush are just having a very long break and that, at the moment, Miki is still living in London and doing some painting and redecorating! The final news snippet is that Emma is playing guitar and singing backing vocals for Tanya Donnelly, who is also on 4ad. She did this on a tv show on channel 5(Yuk! Possibly Jack Docherty, i'm not sure,) last friday. This means she could also be out on tour with her, which might really put Lush to rest for quite a long time. Well, I think that's the most news there's been since Chris's death, which is almost a year ago now. Oh well, let's hope and pray!

  • 18/6/97-The track 'Single Girl,' released as a single last year which got to number 21 in the UK charts, (also included on the number 8 album, 'Lovelife,') has been issued on a new UK compilation called 'Ladykillers 2.' All the songs are by female fronted bands, and the original album, released last year, was of course named after Lush's 'Ladykillers.'

  • 29/5/97-Latest rumours seem to suggest that Lush have a new drummer. He is the American Stephen Albert from the band Scarce. They broke up a couple of months ago so everything would seem to fit. But, unfortunately, nothing has been announced.

  • 20/4/97-From Starlust, the Lush internet mailing list. Miki replies to the Guardian-LUSH singer MIKE BERENYI has slammed the music industry for its flagrant disregard of artists and its treatment of her drummer CHRIS ACLAND, who committed suicide last year. In a letter to British newspaper THE GUARDIAN, Berenyi complains about the paltry $240 a week she and the rest of Lush received for their efforts. But she claims it is "sensationalist" to suggest there is any connection between the group's wages and Acland's suicide. She writes, "I completely agree that there are alarming discrepancies between salaries within the music industry. I would, however, like to clarify a couple of points regarding Chris Acland and the somewhat sensationalist use of his tragedy in illustrating your article. It is true that Chris was on $250 a week (a figure, as you rightly say, that hasn't altered throughout the apparent success of Lush), but this sum also applied to the other three members of the band. For this reason, a publishing deal was of significant importance to us. Though EMMA [ADISON][sic] and I, as the band's songwriters, were the ones to benefit contractually from this arrangement, we have always handed a percentage of our advances to Chris and PHIL [KING]. The $250 per week basic wage was just that - a basic wage, which was considerably topped up by publishing monies." She goes on to condemn the industry for raking in cash from its artists while giving little back, adding, "If you are lucky enough to sell millions, then it'll be record companies, publishers, managers, agents, licensees, PRs that take their slice before any money finds its way to you - the band."

  • 12/4/97-From Starlust, the Lush internet mailing list. Taken from the Guardian-AND YOU THOUGHT BEING A ROCK STAR WAS FUN… News has surfaced that LUSH drummer CHRIS ACLAND was earning just $250 a week when he committed suicide last year. The British rocker, 30, had been on that basic wage for six years, even though Lush were one of Britain's most popular indie bands and had just broken into the charts in America. Acland had split up with his girlfriend and was living in a friend's back room. The band's original bass player STEVE RIPPON says, "Chris visited me in Dublin last summer. He wasn't his usual chirpy self. He was feeling down for loads of reasons but the money situation certainly didn't help. It wasn't anyone else's fault, it's just the way the music business works. He'd been in Lush for eight years, it was his job, but he couldn't even afford a proper place to live." Yep. That sucks.

  • 31/3/97-Apparently, Lush have been approached to take part on a live chat onnme.com Watch the site for more details!

  • 19/3/97-As you may be aware, nothing much is going on in the world of Lush at the moment. However, Miki has said the band are at crisis point,(Source-teletext, about a month ago.) Also, when I was buying some records from 4AD (their company) I asked and they said they are taking a break at the moment.

  • Yesterday evening the o-zone on BBC2 had a feature on 'girl power' which featured a 2 second video clip of Lush!!! The program will be repeated this Sunday!
