September 1999
Nick stormed out of his room, wishing he could get happy. Everyone else was happy. Brian was looking forward to Dallas landing in LA the next day. Grayson and AJ were not-so-patiently counting the days until their reunion. Howie and Deanna were joined at the hip. Kevin had finally achieved his lifelong dream to produce. He was producing a female trio out of Miami called The Islanders. Plus, he had Vanessa.
But Nick knew hi unhappiness had little to do with the fact that he no longer had a girlfriend. He had felt this nagging incompleteness for awhile, before he and Erica had parted ways. Maybe he was lonely.
Nick entered the small coffee shop. He ordered a mocha and looked around the shop. He wasn't really ready to go back to the hotel. There was a girl sitting at a table, reading what appeared to be the sports page.
"Do you mind if I sit down?" Nick asked.
"Go ahead," she said, looking up. She had green eyes that seeemed to sparkle. A look of realization dawned on her face.
"You know who I am, don't you?" Nick asked.
"Yes, Mr. Carter," she said. She quickly pulled her dark blonde hair into a ponytail.
"and what's your name?" Nick asked.
"Leigh Taylor," she responded.
"Are you coming to any of the concerts out here?" Nick asked.
"You mean of the five?" Leigh asked. "Yeah. Tonight's show actually."
"Yeah?" Nick asked. "Are you going alone?"
"No," Leigh said. "I'm bringing my sister, Cordelia."
"Oh. Where is she?" Nick asked.
"In our hotel room next door," Leigh answered. "Sleeping."
"That's where we're staying," Nick said. "Why are you staying in a hotel?"
"Well, we live a little over an hour away and we saw a play at the Ahmanson last night, so we decided to stay in a hotel for a couple days," Leigh answered.
"Ah-ha," Nick said. "So would your sister like backstage passes?"
"Would she like?" Leigh asked. "Who cares about her? I'd love them!"
"Well, lets go get them," Nick said.
"Really?" Leigh asked.
"Yeah, c'mon," Nick said. They picked up their drinks and walked to the hotel.
Nick knocked on a door and AJ answered. "Yo Bone. Is your mom here?"
"Yeah, come in," AJ said, moving so Nick and Leigh could come in. "A new friend?"
"AJ McLean, Leigh Taylor," Nick briefly introduced them.
"Nice to meet you Leigh," AJ said.
"You too," Leigh said, unsuccessfully trying to hide her urge to laugh.
"What?" AJ said.
"Did you intend for your hair to turn pink?" Leigh asked.
AJ laughed, "No. But it was Nick's fault, he picked up the wrong box. My mom's gonna fix it."
"Well, it looks like...an Easter egg," Leigh said.
"Don't I know it?" AJ asked. "So what did you want Kaos?"
"I was wondering if we had any backstage passes left," Nick said.
"How many do you need?" Denise asked.
"Two," Nick answered.
Denise shuffled around in her briefcase. she pulled out two plastic cards with string through them. "Here."
"Thanks Denise," Nick said.
Outside of Denise's room, Nick handed the passes to Leigh. She said, "Thanks Nick."
"Sure," Nick said. "Hey you wanna come to the concert on the bus?"
"Yeah, I'd love it!" Leigh said. "Aren't you a little worried that I'm a psycho fan or something?"
"Maybe I should be," Nick said. "But you don't seem like a teenybopper to me."
"Oh really?" Leigh asked.
"Yeah," Nick said. "I'll see you in awhile."
