Chapter Three: Bright and Early

Brian woke up with a red-haired girl in his arms. Dallas. All of the pain from when he was 18 rushed back to him. My best friend, Brian thought. I've gotta get out of here.

"Morning," Dallas murmured. She cuddled closer to him. "I thought I had been dreaming. I always used to love falling asleep in your arms."

"Dallas, I've gotta go," Brian said. Dallas got up and held out her hand to help him up. He didn't use it.

"What's the matter?" Dallas asked.

"Nothing," Brian said. "I just can't forget."

"Forget what?" Dallas asked, thoroughly confused. Then realization dawned on her. It was when they had broken up. Dallas never knew why he had broken up with her, but he had seemed really hurt. Almost as heartbroken as she had been. "Can't we just let old dogs lie? Can't we be friends?"

"No," Brian said. "I don't want to fall in love with you again. Being around you would hurt too much."

"Was I that horrible?" Dallas asked, her voice rising.

"No, not until-" Brian broke off. "Nevermind."

"I will mind!" Dallas exclaimed. "What happened between us Brian? What happened?"

"You know what happened!" Brian yelled.

"No! I never knew why you broke up with me!" Dallas yelled. "You just told me you never wanted to see me again! How could I know?"

"Do you think I was some sort of idiot?" Brian asked. "Tell me, do you still talk to Steve?"

"I haven't talked to Steve since you and I broke up," Dallas exclaimed. "It hurt too much!"

"Sure it did!" Brian yelled.

"Get out!" Dallas yelled. "You can't get drunk and be my best friend and then wake up and insult me!"

"I can't believe I even came here!" Brian exclaimed. "I don't know what the hell I was thinking!"

"Get out of here Brian Littrell!" Dallas yelled. "I hate you! I never want to see you again! Stay out of my life!"
